Coupland And Lastre's Upset Victories Spark Bulldogs In Virginia Tech Challenge

MSU's 109th-ranked sophomore George Coupland won his second match of the event in an upset bid over 35th-ranked Yoann Re, in a come-from-behind three-set match, 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 6-4. Coupland has the opportunity to become the champion of Flight A tomorrow in his match against Arkansas' 84th-ranked Chris Nott.
State's junior Antonio Lastre picked up his first-career win over a ranked opponent today in a three-set handling in Flight D over No. 81 Patrick Daciek, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.MState's senior Chris Doerr remained unbeaten in the Virginia Tech Challenge, defeating Will Beck in three-sets of his Flight F match, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The Bulldogs' 83rd-ranked sophomore Artem Ilyushin dropped his second-straight Flight B match of the tournament, slipping up against No. 125 Luka Somen in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5. Sophomore Louis Cant of MSU fell in Flight C to Carrado Degli Incerti Tocci, 6-2, 6-4. In Flight E action, State's Max Gregor Smith dropped a two-set match to Sebastian Jacques, 7-5, 6-3. Tanner Stump of MState lost his second match in Flight G play to Zach Pine, which took three sets and two-extended tiebreakers before Stump would go down, 6-7(8), 6-0, 1-0(11). MSU's Hrehan Hakeem lost in similar fashion to Jon Pine, who had to come from behind to take down the Bulldogs' sophomore, 5-7, 6-2, 1-0(11).
The Bulldogs got things started strongly in doubles action, first with the MSU tandem of Coupland and Ilyushin advancing to 2-0 in the Virginia Tech Challenge with an 8-4 route over Beck and Daciek, followed by an 8-5 handling by the State duo of Cant and Doerr against Jacques and Re.
MState's Lastre and Smith lost their first match of the Challenge to the Virginia Tech team of Somen and Tocci. MSU's tandem Hakeem and Stump slipped up in a tight match, 8-6, to Trpimir Kujundzic and Pineof Virginia Tech.
The Bulldogs will conclude action at the Virginia Tech Challenge tomorrow at 9 a.m., when the Bulldogs will compete in Flight play against the Arkansas Razorbacks.
