The Trojans scored twice in the sixth inning, to cut the deficit to 5-3 and loaded the bases in the eighth before senior right-hander John Lalor entered the game retired the two batters he faced to snuff out the threat . State bunched three singles in the bottom of the inning, including an RBI hit by Russ Sneed, to plate an insurance run and close out the game's scoring.
Rice led MSU's 10-hit attack with a pair of singles. Also for the Bulldogs, Sneed and Nappi extended their season-opening hit streaks to nine games apiece. Hogue has now hit safely in seven consecutive games for the Bulldogs.
