CAREER: Inspiring linebacker who went from walk-on to scholarship student-athlete during August camp in 2016 โฆ Scholarship was unveiled as a surprise to him by coach Dan Mullen in a team meeting โฆ A tremendous teammate and standout on special teams coverage โฆ Played in 14 career games with no starts โฆ Began his career as walk-on quarterback before moving to tight end and then finally to linebacker in the spring of 2015 โฆ An honor student in the classroom.
2016 SOPHOMORE SEASON: Saw playing time in all 13 games of the 2016 season and was a valuable part of special teams coverage โฆ Recorded two total tackles: one vs. Arkansas (11/19) and one vs. Ole Miss (11/26).
2015 REDSHIRT FRESHMAN SEASON: Played in one game, recording one tackle against Northwestern State.
PRE COLLEGE:ย Played in flag football leagues growing up in Starkville.
PERSONAL:ย Born Johnny Josiah Phillips on June 13, 1994 โฆ Majoring in industrial technology โฆ Has nine brothers and four sisters โฆ His late father, Randy, was a former strength coach at MSU and taught in physical education department โฆ Mother, Maureen, played volleyball at MSU in the 1970s โฆ One of his brothers, Jonathan, played at MSU from 2010-11 and is an Army Ranger.
