CAREER: Inspiring linebacker who went from walk-on to scholarship student-athlete during August camp in 2016 … Scholarship was unveiled as a surprise to him by coach Dan Mullen in a team meeting … A tremendous teammate and standout on special teams coverage … Played in 14 career games with no starts … Began his career as walk-on quarterback before moving to tight end and then finally to linebacker in the spring of 2015 … An honor student in the classroom.
2016 SOPHOMORE SEASON: Saw playing time in all 13 games of the 2016 season and was a valuable part of special teams coverage … Recorded two total tackles: one vs. Arkansas (11/19) and one vs. Ole Miss (11/26).
2015 REDSHIRT FRESHMAN SEASON: Played in one game, recording one tackle against Northwestern State.
PRE COLLEGE: Played in flag football leagues growing up in Starkville.
PERSONAL: Born Johnny Josiah Phillips on June 13, 1994 … Majoring in industrial technology … Has nine brothers and four sisters … His late father, Randy, was a former strength coach at MSU and taught in physical education department … Mother, Maureen, played volleyball at MSU in the 1970s … One of his brothers, Jonathan, played at MSU from 2010-11 and is an Army Ranger.
