AUSTIN, Texas - Mississippi State looked primed to leave Disch-Falk Field with another statement win Sunday afternoon after Bryce Chance blasted a first-inning grand slam against No. 4 Texas.
Instead, one rough inning changed everything for the No. 10 Diamond Dawgs.
Texas erased a five-run deficit with a nine-run third inning and pulled away for an 11-6 win over Mississippi State, denying MSU a chance to take the series finale after the Bulldogs struck first in emphatic fashion.
State (36-12, 14-10 SEC) jumped on Texas starter Luke Harrison in the opening inning despite recording only two hits. Ace Reese walked with one out, Blake Bevis followed with a two-out walk and Jacob Parker singled to center to score Reese. Vytas Valincius then walked to load the bases before Chance hammered a 3-2 pitch over the left-field wall for a grand slam and a 5-0 Mississippi State lead.
The Longhorns (35-10, 15-8) flipped the game in the third.
Charlie Foster opened the inning with three walks and hit Carson Tinney with a pitch to force in Texas' first run. The Longhorns then kept the pressure on against three State pitchers in the inning. Anthony Pack Jr. delivered a two-run single, Adrian Rodriguez added a two-run single, Temo Becerra doubled in a run and Casey Borba drove in two more with a double down the left-field line. Aiden Robbins capped the inning with an RBI single that gave Texas a 9-5 lead.
Texas added another run in the fourth on Becerra's second RBI double of the day, stretching the lead to 10-5. The Bulldogs answered in the sixth when Parker tripled to center and scored on Valincius' groundout, but State left the bases loaded later in the inning and did not score again.
Chance finished 2-for-2 with a double, a home run, four RBIs, two walks and a stolen base. Parker went 2-for-4 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored. The rest of the Diamond Dawgs' lineup combined to go 0-for-25 as Mississippi State was held to four hits and struck out 11 times.
Harrison settled in after the first inning and earned the win for Texas, improving to 5-2 after allowing five runs on three hits with three walks and nine strikeouts over five innings. Jack Gleason took the loss for State, falling to 3-1, as the Bulldogs used eight pitchers.
Robbins led Texas with two hits, two RBIs and two walks, while Rodriguez, Becerra, Borba and Pack Jr. each drove in two runs. The Longhorns finished with 11 hits and drew nine walks.
Texas added its final run in the seventh after Jayden Duplantier advanced on a throwing error and scored on a Robbins single through the left side, giving the Longhorns an 11-6 advantage.
Mississippi State returns home for their final midweek and non-conference tilt of the regular season hosting Nicholls on Tuesday at 6 p.m. on SEC Network+.
