Dawgs Defeat Lions in Eight Innings

Mississippi State cranked out 13 hits, including a three-run home run, in eight innings
MSU collected two multi-run innings – one in the first scoring seven runs and another in the sixth scoring five runs – to extend their leads and secure the win. Brad Cumbest hit a three-run home run in the sixth while Drew Talley collected his first win of the season.
For the Bulldogs, Talley (1-1) came in early for Cole Cheatham and earned the win after allowing no runs on two hits with three strikeouts during his 2.1 innings on the mound. Two Dawgs followed Talley – Cam Tullar and Mikey Tepper.
Tullar pitched three solid innings after allowing only two hits and collecting four strikeouts. Tepper closed out the night after allowing one hit in two innings. Talley, Tullar and Tepper pitched for a combined seven clean innings.
Offensively, five Dawgs collected multiple RBIs and three Dawgs collected a multi-hit game including RJ Yeager, Kamren James and Cumbest. Yeager went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs and James went 2-for-3 scoring three runs. Cumbest hit his 15th home run on the season after hitting a three-run homer in the sixth to extend State's lead and collected four RBIs. Lane Forsythe, Luke Hancock and Kellum Clark collectively earned the rest of the team's RBIs (7).

North Alabama took an early lead scoring four runs after Luke Harper led off with a single up the middle followed by a Reid Homan single which scored Harper. Devne Daniel followed Homan with a walk then Drew Hudson singled to left field which scored Homan. Reid Singewald singled followed by a Peyton Thomas single to score Daniel and Hudson.

Mississippi State responded in the bottom of the inning scoring seven runs after RJ Yeager, Luke Hancock and Hunter Hines all walked to load the bases then Yeager scored on a fielder's choice. Kellum Clark doubled down the left field line which scored Hancock and Cumbest. Kamren James and Jess Davis both walked which loaded the bases followed by a Lane Forsythe double to right center which scored Clark, James and Davis. Yeager singled to right field to score Forsythe.

The Bulldogs scored one run on two outs to extend their lead after Clark walked, Davis reached after being hit by pitch and Forsythe walked which loaded the bases before Yeager walked to bring in Clark.

Bottom Sixth
The Bulldogs extended their lead by five runs after Logan Tanner singled to center field followed by a Hines double then a Brad Cumbest three-run home run to left center which cleared the bases. Clark walked followed by a James single through the left side and a Yeager single to shortstop before Hancock singled up the middle which scored Clark and James.

Bottom Eighth
Mississippi State scored one run to end the game after James walked, Brayland Skinner doubled and Tanner Leggett walked followed by a Yeager sacrifice fly to score James.

Mississippi State will host Tennessee for a three-game series at Dudy Noble Field starting Thursday, May 19, at 6 p.m. in Starkville. The series opener will air on SEC Network and the games followed will air on SEC Network+.
