
Dawgs Fall To No. 10 Texas A&M In Back-and-Forth Opener

Mississippi State battled back from a 4-0 deficit with the Diamond Dawgs scoring seven unanswered runs to take a 7-4 lead into the seventh inning. In the bottom of the seventh, Texas A&M drew four walks to cut the lead to two before a bases-clearing double gave the Aggies an 8-7 lead.
The Diamond Dawgs continued to fight in the ninth by loading the bases with two outs thanks to a single by RJ Yeager, a hit by pitch and a walk drawn by Logan Tanner. Texas A&M then brought on lefty reliever Will Johnson to face Hunter Hines, who grounded out to first base to end the game.
Mississippi State starter Brandon Smith settled in after the first inning and allowed just two runs the rest of the way. In total, Smith allowed six runs, six hits and struck out four in 6.1 innings before exiting the game in the seventh. KC Hunt (2-4) came on in relief and was charged with the loss after allowing two runs on a hit, while striking out two and walking two. Drew Tally and Cam Tullar combined to pitch the final inning and held A&M scoreless in the eighth.
The Dawgs had 10 hits in the contest compared to nine for the Aggies. State was led by Brad Cumbest, who was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and four runs driven in on the night. RJ Yeager put together a 2-for-5 effort with a two-run home run, while Hunter Hines also tallied two hits in the loss to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Kamren James was 1-for-4 with a home run, while Aaron Down also recorded a double and scored a run in the third inning.

Texas A&M jumped out on top early when Trevor Werner drew a lead-off walk, went to third on a double by Jack Moss and then came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Dylan Rock. Designated hitter Austin Bost followed up with an RBI triple in the left-center gap to score Moss. Brett Minnich then singled up the middle to drive in Bost from third and give the Aggies their third run of the inning.

The Aggies extended their lead in the second frame when Trevor Werner led off the inning with a solo home run to left field.

Mississippi State cut the lead in half when Aaron Downs doubled to centerfield followed by a two-run home run by RJ Yeager, his 17th long ball of the season, to get the Dawgs on the board.

Mississippi State cut the deficit to one the very next inning when Logan Tanner reached on a leadoff walk, followed by back-to-back doubles by Hunter Hines and Brad Cumbest to get the Diamond Dawgs within a run of Texas A&M.

Top Fifth
Mississippi State tooks its first lead of the game in the fifth after Luke Hancock and Hunter Hines both singled before Brad Cumbest drove in everyone with a three-run home run to left that put the Dawgs up by two.

Kamren James gave the Dawgs some insurance in the sixth with a lead-off solo home run to left-center that put State up by three.

Bottom Seventh
Four walks drawn by the Aggies got Texas A&M back within one before catcher Troy Claunch doubled to right-center with the bases loaded and drove in all three runs for a one-run lead.
