Shorthanded Bulldogs Edged By Arkansas, 4-3
April 08, 2022 | Men's Tennis
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Despite being down two key contributors, Mississippi State fought down to the final bitter end on the road Friday at No. 54 Arkansas.
The 30th-ranked Bulldogs were missing both Carles Hernandez and Bautista Vilicich due to injuries and were unable to top the Razorbacks with the six remaining players on their roster.
Arkansas' 4-3 win on Friday snapped a 14-match losing streak to MSU and was its first victory against the Bulldogs since 2008.
"We had our backs against the wall with two lineup players out and I was pleased with how we competed," said MSU head coach Matt Roberts. "Seth Richey showed a lot of energy out there today and that helped the boys as they were pushed from a good Arkansas team."
State (13-10, 3-7 SEC) started things off strong in the Dills Indoor Center by claiming the doubles point. Alberto Colas and Davide Tortora took down Adrien Burdet and Melvin Manuel 6-4 before the 37th-ranked duo of Florian Broska and Gregor Ramskogler clinched the point with their 7-6(4) victory over Alex Reco and Nico Rousset.
"It was an impressive doubles point," Roberts said. "It was great to see how we problem solved with new teams and new spots. We are looking forward to a healthy lineup next week."
The Hogs were able to steal the early momentum away from Mississippi State by winning the first three singles matches. Reco, ranked 107th in singles, upset No. 31 Broska in consecutive 6-2 sets while No. 101 Aleksa Bucan beat Richey 6-4, 6-3 and Burdet won against Colas 6-1, 7-6(4).
No. 68 Nemanja Malesevic was finally able to get the Bulldogs on the board in singles with his three-set victory versus Rousset. Malesevic fell behind after dropping the first set 6-2 but rallied with 6-2, 6-3 wins to claim his team-leading 17th victory during dual match play.
Malesevic has now won seven of his last nine singles matches and sports a 6-1 singles record on the road this spring.
Ramskogler evened the score at 3-3 with a three-set win against Oscar Pinto Sansano. Ramskogler claimed the first set 6-1, lost the second by the same score then edged the Razorback 7-5 in the final set.
It was the third straight win for Ramskogler in singles and fifth consecutive overall after back-to-back doubles victories.
The match came down to a three-setter on Court 5 between Tortora and Manuel. Manuel, who is now 13-2 in dual match play, took the first set 6-3. Tortora was able to take a second-set tiebreaker 7-6(5) before falling in the final stanza, 6-1.
Arkansas rose above .500 with the win, improving to 12-11 overall and is now 3-7 in conference play.
MSU closes out the regular season at home next weekend against No. 45 Vanderbilt and No. 12 Kentucky. The Bulldogs will battle the Commodores on Friday at 3 p.m.
