State Sweeps Singles To Down Vandy, 6-1
April 15, 2022 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE – After dropping the doubles point to No. 50 Vanderbilt on Friday, Mississippi State men's tennis coach Matt Roberts met with his team during the brief five-minute break before switching over to singles.
Roberts' message was direct and definitely heard loud and clear as his 35th-ranked Bulldogs swept all six courts in singles for a 6-1 victory.
"We played a nervous, tight doubles," Roberts said. "We had a lack of energy and a lack of belief. I lit them up pretty hard after that and told them to believe in themselves and go out there and play with committed action. That lit a bit of a fire under them and we won four first sets and we rode that momentum."
No. 74 Nemanja Malesevic was the first off the court with a dominating 6-2, 6-0 victory over 88th-ranked Joubert Klopper. Malesevic has now won eight of his last 10 singles matches and tops the team with a 18-5 record during dual match play.
"I think I did the best job this match of this whole season of pushing myself mentally," Malesevic said. "I was there for every single point…I'm pretty happy with what I did today."
No. 27 Florian Broska also earned a ranked victory from the top position. Broska fell 6-3 in his first set against 31st-ranked George Harwell but bounced back with 6-3, 6-4 wins to clinch the match for the Bulldogs.
The singles win was the 97th of Broska's career, which ties him with Matthieu Ballay (1996-99) for the sixth-most in school history. It was also the 167th overall victory of his career, moving him into a tie for eighth all-time at State with Romain Ambert (2001-04).
Malesevic and Broska each have seven wins over ranked singles opponents this season.
Alberto Colas eased past Siim Troost in straight sets 6-4, 6-0 and Davide Tortora was able provide the Bulldogs with a pivotal third point with his 6-3, 7-6(5) victory over Jeremie Casabon.
"Dade coming back from 5-2 and making those adjustments were huge," Roberts said. "(Casabon) started serving and volleying and did a great job changing tactics. Dade had to make an adjustment on his adjustment. Him coming back was huge."
Gregor Ramskogler claimed his fourth consecutive singles victory with his 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 showing against Max Freeman.
Carles Hernandez returned to action to defeat Marcus Ferreira in three sets. Hernandez lost a tiebreaker in the first set 7-6(2) but evened things with a 6-3 win in the second and closed things out with a 10-7 victory in a super tiebreaker.
"After losing the doubles point, I think we came back the toughest we've been all season," Malesevic said. "I really liked how the guys responded…Everybody showed up and we were really tough and resilient for every single point."
Mississippi State improved to 14-10 overall and 4-7 in Southeastern Conference play while the Commodores dropped to 14-10 and 2-9 in the league.
The Bulldogs will close out the regular season on Easter hosting No. 10 Kentucky at noon.
