Bulldogs Begin Final Homestand vs. Vandy
April 14, 2022 | Men's Tennis
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State men's tennis will wrap up the regular season this weekend with two home matches as part of Super Bulldog Weekend festivities.
The 35th-ranked Bulldogs will host No. 50 Vanderbilt on Friday at 3 p.m. before concluding things with 10th-ranked Kentucky on Sunday at noon.
Entering Friday's match, State holds a six-match winning streak against the Commodores including a 5-2 victory last spring in Nashville. The last time the two teams clashed at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre, the Bulldogs swept Vandy 7-0 in 2019.
The Bulldogs (13-10, 3-7 SEC) are coming off a 4-3 nail-biter at Arkansas last Friday with MSU missing both Carles Hernandez and Bautista Vilicich due to injury.
Alberto Colas and Davide Tortora, who recently started teaming together earlier this month, set the tone early for the Bulldogs after downing the Arkansas duo of Adrien Burdet and Melvin Manuel 6-4. Colas and Tortora are now 2-1 together since April 1.
Florian Broska and Gregor Ramskogler, the now 46th-ranked duo in the country, clinched the doubles point after taking down Alex Reco and Nico Rousset of Arkansas 7-6(4). The pairing climbed to a 10-8 overall record and 5-3 in SEC play.
Seth Richey, along with partner Nemanja Malesevic, saw action against Arkansas' Jacob Sweeney and Hunter Harrison, but the match was ultimately suspended at 5-5 after the Bulldogs clinched doubles point.
After dropping the opening set in singles, the now 74th-ranked Malesevic came roaring back to defeat Rousset 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Malesevic has won seven of his last nine matches and currently holds 17 dual-match victories, the most out of any Bulldog on the roster.
Ramskogler evened things up at 3-3 with his 6-1, 1-6, 7-5 victory over Arkansas' Oscar Pinto Sansano at the No. 3 spot of the singles lineup. Ramskogler has won five out of seven matches that went to a deciding set this season and is currently on a three-match winning streak.
No. 27 Broska currently has 96 career singles wins, good enough for seventh all-time in school history. He needs just one more victory to move into a sixth-place tie with Matthieu Ballay (1996-99). Broska has also accumulated 166 total wins, which ties him for ninth all-time at MSU.
Vanderbilt comes into Friday's contest with a 14-9 overall record and a 2-8 record in SEC play. The Commodores have dropped three straight, including a close 4-3 loss at home last Sunday against No. 5 Tennessee.
The Commodore lineup features two ranked singles players, George Harwell (31) and Joubert Klopper (88), as well as one ranked doubles duo in Siim Troost and Michael Ross (67).
