Men's Tennis Travels To Auburn
March 31, 2022 | Men's Tennis
AUBURN, Ala., – Following a successful return to the home courts last week, Mississippi State's men's tennis team is back out on the road again to face Auburn on Friday at 3 p.m.
The 35th-ranked Bulldogs are quite familiar with the playing conditions on the Plains since the Yarbrough Tennis Center was home to the ITA Southern Regionals this past fall.
MSU leads the overall series 31-21 and have won 12 of the last 13, including seven straight. The Bulldogs have not lost at Auburn since 2009 and claimed a 6-1 victory at home last season.
State improved to 12-8 overall and 2-5 in the SEC after beating Alabama 5-0 last Friday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
No. 39 Florian Broska claimed his team-leading sixth ranked victory of the spring last weekend, downing Alabama's 112th-ranked Filip Planinsek. The win moved Broska into a tie for 10th in overall career wins in MSU history with 164 alongside Per Nilsson (1991-94) and Giovanni Oradini (2017-21).
Broska has 96 career singles wins and needs one more to match Matthieu Ballay (1996-99) for sixth all-time in the school annals.
No. 72 Nemanja Malesevic has won five of his last six singles matches and enters the weekend with a team-best 15-4 record during dual match play.
The doubles pairing of Broska and Gregor Ramskogler heads into the contest against the Tigers after clinching the doubles point last Friday against Alabama's 44th ranked duo of Planinsek and German Samofalov.
Auburn is ranked No. 29 nationally and have a perfect 10-0 record at home. During their last outing a week ago, the Tigers downed Ole Miss 6-1 in Oxford.
Auburn's singles lineup features ranked competitors Tyler Stice (91), Tad Maclean (111) and Jan Galka (115). Malesevic defeated Maclean in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 last season while Alberto Colas downed Galka 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(4).
Maclean and Finn Murgett are also ranked No. 60 in doubles for the Tigers and made a run at the 2021 NCAA Doubles Championship last May, ultimately falling in the finals to Tennessee's Adam Walton and Pat Harper.
