Bulldogs Beat Auburn On The Plains
April 01, 2022 | Men's Tennis
AUBURN, Ala., – Entering Friday, no one had been able to beat No. 29 Auburn on their home courts in men's tennis this season.
Mississippi State, however, put a stop to the Tigers' 11-game home winning streak that dated back to last year with a 4-3 victory. The triumph also extended the Bulldogs' own winning streak against Auburn to eight-straight matches.
"I'm very proud of our guys and the fight they had today," said head coach Matt Roberts. "It was great to see our grit and resiliency in doubles as we had two new doubles teams out there. The guys came prepared with a plan and executed it."
MSU, ranked 35th in the latest ITA poll, claimed the first four points of the match and improved to 13-8 overall and 3-5 in Southeastern Conference play.
The Bulldogs were able to claim the ever so crucial doubles point early on and were able to do so with two new tandems. Carles Hernandez and Nemanja Malesevic evened things up in doubles with their 6-3 win over Jan Galka and Tyler Stice and Alberto Colas and Davide Tortora were able to clinch the point for State by outlasting Raul Dobai and Josh Raab 7-5.
In singles, No. 72 Malesevic improved to a team-best 16-4 record during dual match play by making quick work of 115th-ranked Jan Galka 6-3, 6-1. It was Malesevic's sixth ranked win of the spring, tying him with Florian Broska for the most on the team in that category.
Colas followed suit with a straight set victory over Will Nolan 6-3, 6-2. Gregor Ramskogler was able to clinch the match for the Bulldogs with his 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win against Dobai.
It was the third match Ramskogler has clinched this season.
Broska, Hernandez and Tortora all battled the Tigers (15-5, 4-3 SEC) for three sets but were unable to prevail.
Mississippi State returns home on Sunday to host rival Ole Miss at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs will have a free crawfish boil and be giving away t-shirts to the first 100 fans in attendance.
