Diamond Dawg Gameday: at Memphis

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State (15-10) will hit the road for the first of four straight away games beginning with a midweek matchup against Memphis (12-8) at 6 p.m. CT on Tuesday, March 29, at AutoZone Park in Memphis.

DAWG BITES

Mississippi State enters the week with a 15-10 overall record over the first 25 games of the season, including a 3-3 record in SEC play following a series win over Alabama at home last weekend. The Diamond Dawgs are 2-4 in road games this season.

State is currently ranked 10th in the country and 3rd in the SEC with 41 home runs on the season. The Dawgs are led by freshman Hunter Hines and sophomore Kellum Clark with eight home runs each.

The Dawgs are hitting .278 as a team with 47 doubles and 41 home runs. MSU is out-scoring opponents 202-129.

MSU's pitching staff enters the week ranked 2nd in the SEC and 4th nationally in strikeouts per nine innings (12.1). MSU RHP Preston Johnson leads the team with 50 strikeouts in six appearances (5 GS), while he is ranked 3rd among SEC pitchers and 24th nationally in strikeouts. RHP Parker Stinnett is 6th in the SEC with 46 strikeouts.

In the last five games, Brad Cumbest and Kamren James are hitting well over .400 for the Dawgs. Cumbest is 10-for-21 (.476) over that stretch with two home runs, while James is hitting .455 (10-for-22) with a home run and two doubles.

Mississippi State leads the all-time series, 55-27, over Memphis in a series that dates back to 1950. The last meeting between the Dawgs and Tigers came during the 2019 season. State defeated Memphis by a score of 10-9 in Starkville on May 8, 2019. The previous year, the Dawgs traveled to Memphis and fell, 6-1, to the Tigers.
