No. 41 Mississippi State Women’s Tennis Falls To No. 21 Vanderbilt In Regular Season Finale
April 10, 2021 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE – In a match that was much closer than the score would indicate, No. 41 Mississippi State women's tennis fell 4-0 to No. 21 Vanderbilt Saturday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre to conclude the 2021 regular season. State was up a set in the three remaining matches when play was suspended.
With the setback, State dropped to 10-11, 2-11 in SEC play, while the Commodores improved to 13-8, 5-8 in conference play. VU now leads 38-8 in the all-time series with MSU and has claimed the last three matches between the teams.
Vanderbilt drew first blood on the day by claiming the doubles point. The Commodores' 58th-ranked duo of Marcella Cruz and Emma Kurtz blanked Bulldogs Chloé Cirotte and Alexandra Mikhailuk 6-0 on court 2. On court 3, MSU veterans Magda Adaloglou and Lilian Poling paired up against Anessa Lee and Christina Rosca, where the Commodore tandem took a 6-2 decision to give Vandy the early 1-0 lead. Bulldogs Emma Antonaki and Marta Falceto were ahead 5-2 over No. 54 Anna Ross and Holly Staff at the top spot in the lineup when the doubles point was clinched.
The Bulldogs earned three first set victories in singles, but the Commodores claimed the first three singles matches completed to secure the victory.
Cruz notched the first singles point for Vanderbilt with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over MSU's Falceto on court 6. Then, State's 32nd-ranked Antonaki fell in a top-50 battle against VU's 49th-ranked Rosca 6-3, 6-3 at the top spot in the lineup. Vanderbilt's Kurtz clinched the match as she held off MSU's No. 74 Adaloglou in a close first set to go on and claim a 7-6(2), 6-1 triumph on court 2.
All remaining matches were then suspended with State's Poling, Cirotte and Mikhailuk having each claimed the first set.
In her final regular season match as a collegian, Poling won four straight games at the No. 3 position to come back from down 3-0 against VU's Ross, eventually securing the first set in a gutsy tiebreaker 7-6(4). In the second, Poling trailed 5-3 when play was halted.
Bulldogs Cirotte and Mikhailuk were each one service hold away from winning their respective matches. Cirotte led 6-3, 5-4 over the Commodores' Lee on court 4, while Mikhailuk was up 6-4, 5-1 against Vandy's Staff at No. 5.
