March 07, 2021 | Women's Tennis
BATON ROUGE, La. – Winding up their weekend road trip, the 34th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis team fell 4-0 to No. 19 LSU Sunday afternoon at the LSU Tennis Complex.
With the setback, State dropped to 9-5, 1-5 in SEC play, while the Tigers improved to 9-2, 4-2 in conference play. LSU now owns a 37-13 advantage over State all-time.
LSU earned an early 1-0 advantage after claiming a very tight opening doubles point. Bulldogs Magda Adaloglou and Marta Falceto fell to LSU's Taylor Bridges and Paris Corley 6-3 on court 2 to open action. The matches on courts 1 and 3 would both then go to tiebreakers to decide the first point of the afternoon. On court 3, Tigers Samantha Buyckx and Maggie Cubitt slipped past State's tandem of Chloé Cirotte and Lilian Poling 7-6(4) to clinch the point. State's Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk, competing in the top spot in the lineup, were ahead in their tiebreaker at 6-6(2-1) when play was suspended.
The Tigers grabbed five first sets in singles and claimed the first three matches complete to bring the score to its final 4-0 margin.
In a ranked duel at the top spot in the lineup, LSU's 41st-ranked Bridges ousted State's 69th-ranked Antonaki 6-1, 6-2. Then, MSU's Poling dropped her match against Cubitt 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot. LSU's Geissler then downed the Bulldog true freshman Cirotte 6-3, 6-4 on court 5 to secure the victory for the Tigers.
All remaining matches were then suspended. After falling 6-4 to Corley in the first set, State's Adaloglou was fighting in the second on court 2, even at 5-5 when LSU clinched the match. Mikhailuk and Falceto were also still playing when play was halted. MSU's Mikhailuk was ahead 6-3, 5-4 against LSU's Richardson on court 3, while the Bulldogs' Falceto and Buyckx, at No. 6, split the first two sets and had just begun a third when action was halted.
