March 11, 2021 | Women's Tennis
AUBURN, Ala. – No. 36 Mississippi State women's tennis fell 4-0 to No. 18 Auburn Thursday afternoon at the Yarbrough Tennis Center on the Auburn University campus.
With the setback, State dropped to 9-6, 1-6 in SEC play, while the Tigers improved to 10-2, 5-1 in conference play. Auburn now leads the series with State 31-17 and broke a two-match MSU win streak in the series with Thursday's victory.
Auburn gained an early 1-0 advantage after claiming the opening doubles point. At the top spot in the lineup, AU's 11th-ranked tandem of Selin Ovunc and Taylor Russo retired against 41st-ranked Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine with the score even at 1-1. AU claimed the other two courts to grab the first point of the afternoon. On court 3, pairing for the first time, Bulldogs Emma Antonaki and Marta Falceto fell to Tigers Carolyn Ansari and Anastasia Astakhova 6-2. At the No. 2 position, Auburn's tandem of Georgie Axon and Adeline Flach edged Alexandra Mikhailuk and Lilian Poling 6-4.
The Tigers grabbed four first sets in singles and claimed the first three matches complete to clinch the win. Racine dropped her match against AU's 62nd-ranked Ovunc 6-1, 6-3 at the top spot in the lineup. Then, Tiger Anastasia Astakhova held off MSU's Falceto 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 6 position. Axon then clinched the match for Auburn, downing State's Mikhailuk 6-3, 6-2 on court 4.
All of the remaining matches were then suspended with MSU fighting and clawing in all three contests. MSU's 69th-ranked Antonaki and true freshman Chloé Cirotte had split the first two sets with their respective opponents when play was halted. AU's Yu Chen held a slim lead on Antonaki 6-2, 1-6, 3-2 on court 2, while Cirotte had just taken the second set from the Tigers' Flach at No. 5 - even at 5-7, 6-3 - and had just begun a third set. After claiming the first set, the Bulldog veteran Adaloglou was just a game away from winning her match when play was halted, leading Auburn's Ansari 5-4 in the second at the No. 3 spot.
