No. 34 MSU Women’s Tennis Drops Match At No. 22 Texas A&M
March 05, 2021 | Women's Tennis
BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 34th-ranked Mississippi State women's tennis fell 4-0 to No. 22 Texas A&M Friday evening at the Mitchell Tennis Center on the Texas A&M University campus.
With the setback, State dropped to 9-4, 1-4 in SEC play, while the Aggies improved to 10-3, 2-1 in conference play. Texas A&M now owns a 10-1 advantage in the all-time series with the Bulldogs.
"We had a poor start in doubles. We settled down and had opportunities to steal the point. It was just a little too late," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "I thought we carried a little of that momentum into singles. In the end, like in a couple other matches this year, it came down to needing that doubles point to have a chance for the win. We have to have a better start against LSU on Sunday."
Texas A&M struck first by claiming a very tight opening doubles point. State's 41st-ranked tandem of Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine met the Aggies' 39th-ranked Jayci Goldsmith and Tatiana Makarova in a top-50 doubles battle at the top spot in the lineup. After going down 5-1, the Bulldog duo cut TAMU's advantage to 5-4, but Goldsmith and Makarova closed out the match in a 6-4 decision.
On court three, State's duo of Chloé Cirotte and Lilian Poling fell to Aggies Riley McQuaid and Katya Townsend, also in 6-4 fashion after State had fought back to 5-4 from 4-1 down. Bulldogs Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk trailed 5-4 to A&M's pair of Dorthea Faa-Hviding and Renee McBryde on court 2 when play was suspended.
In singles, the teams split first sets at three apiece, but the Aggies would close out the three matches in which they had gained the early advantage in straight sets to clinch the team victory.
At the No. 4 spot, MSU's Mikhailuk fell 6-3, 6-1 to TAMU's Faa-Hviding. On court 1, State's Racine dropped a tight first set 7-5 and eventually fell to 64th-ranked Aggie Makarova 7-5, 6-2. Texas A&M then clinched the match with a victory on court 5 where McBryde dealt State's Poling a 6-1, 6-4 setback.
The three remaining matches were then suspended, all in the third set, with State leading in two of the contests. On court 3, MSU's 69th-ranked Antonaki led A&M's Goldsmith 6-0, 3-6, 6-5 when play was halted. At No. 3, the Aggies' Townsend was up 4-6, 6-2, 3-0 against the Bulldogs' Adaloglou. The MSU true freshman Cirotte was ahead of TAMU's McQuaid 6-2, 1-6, 2-1 on court 6.
