Bulldogs Set for 2021 SEC Indoor Championships
February 24, 2021 | Track & Field
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Mississippi State track and field is ready to start the SEC Indoor Championships on Thursday, hosted by Arkansas.
Â
"This is the highest level of competition we've been facing all year," said head coach Chris Woods. "I'm expecting a high-quality meet and for our student-athletes to rise to the occasion and to take all they've learned throughout the season and implement that so we can have the best possible meet."
Â
The Bulldogs have a young squad who will compete at the Conference Championships, with four freshmen on the men's side and three on the women's side.
Â
Freshmen Amy Warren, Kennedy Jackson, Rosealee Cooper, Sema'J Daniels, Daniel Pepper, and Shamar Rose are all ranked in the top-5 for freshmen in the Conference in their events, with several also being ranked in the top-20 of their class in the NCAA.Â
Â
Day one of the Championships will feature veterans Shayla Broughton, Asia Poe and Aley Woodberry in the pentathlon, beginning at 10:15 a.m. Broughton broke her personal best and moved into the No. 2 all-time slot at Mississippi State with a point total of 4,090 at the Music City Challenge. Also competing on the first day will be the distance medley relay from both the men and women, along with Daniel Pepper and Francesca Chambers in the weight throw.
Â
Broughton is not the only one fans will see throughout competition that are on the cusp of breaking a school record. Cooper is currently tied for the No. 3 slot in school history in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.23. She is the No. 1 freshman in her event in the SEC and is the No. 3 freshman overall in the NCAA. Faith Gilbert sits at No. 2 at State in both the 60m and 200m, which she will be competing in both this weekend.Â
Â
Newly minted school record holders Jesse Henderson and Giacomo DeLuca will also be seen competing in their respective events in Arkansas, the 60m hurdles and the 3000m. They both broke the school records a week prior. School record holder Peyton Mickelson will also be competing in her event, the pole vault, this weekend.
Â
Overall, State's women are ranked 45th and the men are 50th, set by the USTFCCCA for week five, announced on February 22.
Â
The entirety of the meet will be streamed on the SEC Network Plus, with coverage beginning Thursday at 11 a.m. CT. Flash Results will be the timing company for the meet.
Â
A full recap of each day of competition will be posted to HailState.com after the conclusion of the events each day, along with full results. For more information on the Bulldog track and field program, search "@HailStateTF" on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
