Bulldogs Use Strong Second Round to Climb Up Leaderboard at The Ally
October 26, 2021 | Women's Golf
West Point, Miss. – Mississippi State women's golf cemented a strong second round to leap six sports up the leaderboard to third place heading into the final round on Wednesday. State carded a score of 7-under par (281) to bring their two-day total to 4-under (572). 7-under in the second round is tied for the 14th lowest round in school history while 4-under is the eighth lowest total after 36 holes in team history.
"We got to a really good start today," head coach Charlie Ewing said. "The big difference that I saw was maintaining momentum. We got off to a good start this morning on the back nine, which is typically the harder nine. It was really good for us to come out and produce early by getting some birdies and going under par. Today we did struggle a bit on hole 18 but we did not let that change the momentum. We went onto the front nine and got some birdies. We maintained ourselves and rode momentum until the end."
Julia Lopez Ramirez used a strong second round to propel up the leaderboard ten spots and is now tied for fifth after 36 holes. Lopez Ramirez carded a second-round score of 3-under (69) to bring her three-day total to 4-under.
Â
On Hole 16, Lopez Ramirez launched a ball from the fairway that found the hole from over 100 yards out to record the Bulldogs first eagle of the season.
Â
"It is something that you want to acknowledge and celebrate," Ewing said about the Lopez Ramirez Eagle. "The mind is really powerful in the way of emotions in remembering things that you do. When you do things well, you want to make sure that you put a lot of emotion behind it. I know that is something that Coach Lauren [Whyte] does an incredible job with Julia. They spend a lot of time together on the golf course. She does a really good job of celebrating Julia and the success that she has. To the contrary, when a player does not have the best score on one shot, hole or round, you want to make sure that they can cut the emotion out. I think that Coach Lauren has done a fantastic job with Julia by spending time with her and celebrating the things that she does well and detecting and modifying things that she did not do well. After knocking in a shot like that, you want to be able to celebrate it and enjoy it."
Â
Hannah Levi carded five birdies in the second round to move up the leaderboard 12 spots and is tied for ninth after 36 holes. After an even par score of 72 in the first round, Levi carded 70 in the second to bring her two-day total to 2-under.
Â
Blair Stockett birdied two of her first three holes to start her ascend 20 spots up the leaderboard to finish the second round tied for 13th with a two-day total of 1-under. Abbey Daniel also used a strong second round to move up the leaderboard 28 spots and is now tied for 28th with a score of 3-over. Ashley Gilliam used an even par score of 72 to keep her score at 6-over and is tied for 47th heading into the final round. Gilliam has carded the fifth most pars of the event so far with 24 through two rounds.
Â
Competing individually, Valeria Mendizabal is tied for 28th after the second round with a score of 3-over, while Lauren Miller is tied for 50th through the second day with a score of 7-over. Ana Pina Ortega finished the day in a five-way tie for 60th with a score of 11-over. Jarutrawee Khotchagrai is 65th heading into day two with a score of 12-over.
Â
