MSU Women’s Tennis Dominates UAB, 6-1, In Home Opener

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State women's tennis posted a dominating 6-1 victory over UAB in the Bulldogs' home opener Friday afternoon at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
With the win, State (5-3) improved to 27-3 all-time in the series with UAB (3-4) while also claiming its 17th-straight in the series. The Maroon and White extended their non-conference home win streak to 38 matches, dating back to the 2013 season.
"It was nice to be back home and get some sunshine even though the temperatures were dropping towards the end of the match," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "I was obviously happy with the win. I thought we were solid especially for the first time outdoors on the year."
The Bulldogs didn't take long to claim the doubles point on Friday. The freshman-senior tandem of Marta Falceto and Sara Lizariturry kicked things off with a commanding 6-1 victory over Megan Bertrands and Hana Sisirak of UAB on court 3. The 46th-ranked State duo of Magda Adaloglou and Tamara Racine followed suit with an impressive 6-2 triumph over the Blazers' Dominika Hrabalova and Adela Wasserbauerova at No. 1 to clinch the doubles point for State. Bulldogs Emma Antonaki and Alexandra Mikhailuk were even at 3-3 with Jana Hecking and Marlene Herrmann when their match was suspended.
In singles, the true freshman Falceto – in her home debut as a Bulldog - grabbed the first set 6-3 at the No. 6 position, before UAB's Sisirak retired, extending the Maroon and White's lead to 2-0.
Antonaki and Adaloglou posted back-to-back victories on courts 2 and 3, respectively, to clinch the match for State. The sophomore Antonaki cruised past Wasserbauerova in a convincing 6-0, 6-3 decision at No. 2. The junior Adaloglou, who had clinched the doubles point with Racine, also clinched the match for the Bulldogs with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 victory over Herrmann at No. 3.
Also making her debut at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre, State's rookie Mikhailuk cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over the Blazers' Hrabalova at the No. 4 spot to push State out to a 5-0 lead.
Competing at the No. 1 position for the first time in her career, the State sophomore Racine fell in a tight 6-4, 6-4 battle to UAB's Hecking, the Blazers' only point of the afternoon.
Redshirt freshman Valeria Nikolaev capped off a successful home opener for the Bulldogs as she downed Bertrands of UAB 6-3, 6-2 on court 5.
The Bulldogs return to action Sunday, Feb. 16, as they travel to Montgomery, Ala., to take on Alabama State in a doubleheader, with matches slated to begin at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. CT. Mississippi State opens its 2020 SEC campaign at Missouri on Feb. 28.
