MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Mississippi State women's tennis recorded its second shutout of the season as the Bulldogs dominated Alabama State 4-0 on Sunday on the road.
Due to a near-five-hour rain delay, the Bulldogs (6-3) and Hornets (1-3) were only able to complete half of the double-header they had scheduled for the day, and only competed in singles. With the win, MSU remained perfect against the Hornets, now owning a 5-0 ledger all-time. Sunday was the first meeting ever between the teams in Montgomery.
Carrying their momentum from their home-opening win over UAB on Friday, the Maroon and White opened the match at Alabama State strong and never let up. The Bulldogs captured four straight-set victories and did not allow the Hornets to claim more than three games in a single set.
State jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when junior Meredith Roberts ousted ASU's Victoria Cabral 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 6 position in the Jackson, Miss., product's first match in dual match singles play this season.
Then, at No. 2, true freshman Alexandra Mikhailuk made quick work of ASU's Maria Popova with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 decision. In the No. 1 position for the first time this season, junior Magda Adaloglou earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over the Hornets' Madalena Andrade to give MSU a 3-0 lead.
Redshirt freshman Valeria Nikolaev, competing on court 3, finished off a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over ASU's Urska Velec to clinch the match for the Bulldogs.
State's Sara Lizariturry and Marta Falceto held leads in their respective matches - at the No. 4 and 5 positions – when play was suspended after MSU's clinched the triumph.
The Bulldogs return to action Sunday, Feb. 28, as they open their 2020 SEC campaign at Missouri. The match is slated for a 5 p.m. CT start time.
