State Cross Country Returns to Louisiana for SEC Championship
October 29, 2020 | Cross Country
BATON ROUGE, La. – Mississippi State cross country returns to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to compete in the SEC Championship on Friday.
"This meet is obviously the culmination of everything since summer training and since finding out that the SEC was going to let us have a cross country season, which we were really happy about," distance coach Patrick McGregor said. "It's just like anything else. There are teams here that want to win. As long as there's a championship, we want to do the best we can. I believe my team is in really good shape and the most fit they've ever been. We're going to go show our fitness tomorrow against the rest of the SEC."
The league meet, hosted by the LSU, will be held at the University Club. The women's 6K race is set to begin at 9:05 a.m. CT with the men's race and an awards ceremony to follow.
The Maroon and White are no strangers to the University Club course as they traveled to Baton Rouge for the season opener on Sept. 19, where they earned a fourth-place finish at the SEC Preview.
The Bulldogs will send nine women to the line, including eight who have ran in a conference championship race. Ashley Melcherts will make her SEC Championship debut on Friday.
All 14 member schools will field a women's team. Arkansas is the nation's top-ranked women's team while LSU and Ole Miss received votes in this week's USTFCCCA Coaches' Poll.
Coverage of the SEC Cross Country Championships will be available on the SEC Network and can be seen on the Watch ESPN app and WatchESPN.com. Live results for the meet can be found here.
State is coming off a tenth-place finish at the UAB Blazer Classic on Oct. 16, ignited by a nineteenth-place finish by Sylvia Russell.
