BATON ROUGE, La. – The Mississippi State cross country team concluded its fall season at the SEC Championship Friday morning at the University Club.
The Bulldogs earned 10th-place, highlighted by a top-30 performance by Sylvia Russell.
The senior covered the 6K course in a personal-best time of 20:48.9 and finished 23rd overall. Russell was State's top finisher and set a new personal-best in each race this fall.
After Russell's finish, sophomore Breja Hooks (47th) and senior Audrey Honiotes (56th) were the next two Bulldogs to cross the line. Hooks and Honiotes both set personal bests finishing in 21:29.5 and 21:36.5, respectively. Honiotes shaved nearly three minutes off her time at the SEC Championship a year ago and finished 83 places higher.
Ava Weems and Emma Tucker rounded out the top five for MSU. Weems placed 77th with a time of 22:02.1, while Tucker finished 93rd in 22:19.3.
The Maroon and White set four personal bests in the conference championship. In addition to Honiotes, Hooks and Russell, Ashley Melcherts cut time off her previous mark and completed her first SEC Championship race in 22:35.1.
Top-ranked Arkansas took the team title in the women's 6K with 41 points and four top-10 finishers. Mercy Chelangat of Alabama took home the individual championship with a time of 19:46.5.
The SEC Championship race marked State's last competition this fall. Developments for a winter cross country season will be announced at a later date.
