Russell leads Bulldog Efforts at UAB Blazer Classic

HOOVER, Ala. – The Mississippi State cross country team earned a 10th-place finish on Saturday at UAB's Blazer Classic held at Veterans Park.
State was led by Sylvia Russell, who placed 19th and shaved 14 seconds off her 6K personal best with a time of 20:51.87. Silvia De La Pena Garibay was the second Bulldog to cross the finish line, completing the race in 21:33.40 and placing 47th overall.
In addition to Russell's personal best, Audrey Honiotes shattered her previous mark by 41 seconds en route to a 52nd-place finish.
Breja Hooks (79th) and Ava Weems (82nd) rounded out the top five for MSU. Hooks covered the 6K course in 22:18.53, while Weems finished in 22:24.95. Sydney Steely placed 85th overall with a time of 22:31.73 in her 2020 cross country debut.
Next, the Bulldogs will prepare for the 2020 SEC Cross Country Championships, held Oct. 30 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
