HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Carrying a 3-0 start, the Mississippi State volleyball program heads south for more tournament play.
On Friday and Saturday, September 6-7, the Bulldogs will play three matches as part of the Southern Miss Classic, hosted by USM at Reed Green Coliseum in Hattiesburg.
MSU opened the 2019 campaign at home last weekend with a sweep of the StarkVegas Classic. This weekend's tournament will be State's first road and neutral-site tests.
"We started the season on a high note," head coach Julie Darty said. "There was a lot of good that happened during the tournament last weekend, but we have a lot of season left and we need to continue to build and make strides in the right direction. This team is committed to getting better. They understand this is a long process, but they also understand how to work hard and feel confident in the product we are putting out there.
"We have had a good week of practice, and it will be good to hit the road and get tested early. This is not an easy tournament. There are no easy teams here, and we know that we come in as the SEC team with a target on our back that everyone wants to knock off. We are just going to continue to focus on getting better every single day and with every opportunity we step on the court."
Coverage of the tournament will be available via live stats on the MSU Stat Broadcast page, while streaming of all six matches can be found on CUSATV with a paid subscription.
State and Southland Conference opponent New Orleans will face off Friday at 3 p.m. CT to open the Southern Miss Classic. The two programs have not played each other since 2002, and MSU has won two of the last three meetings.
At 10 a.m. Saturday, MSU meets up with Arkansas State, who finished with a 19-14 record in 2018. The Bulldogs defeated the Red Wolves in the last meeting, a 3-1 victory on September 21, 2013.
The tournament finale is set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday when the Bulldogs take on host Southern Miss. MSU holds a 43-13 record all-time against the Golden Eagles and won the most recent matchup in 2015.
Named to the StarkVegas Classic All-Tournament team, seniors Alleah Stamatis and Amarrah Cooks and freshman Callie Minshew are off to solid starts to their 2019 campaigns.
The Most Valuable Player of last weekend's tournament, Stamatis finished with 102 assists, 32 digs and 12 kills. The senior setter is averaging 8.5 assists per set through three matches and earned a double-double in the season opening match against Chattanooga, collecting 35 assists and 18 digs.
Cooks has been State's most efficient attacker to date. The senior has converted 27 kills on 52 attempts, while committing just four errors for a .442 hitting percentage. Cooks also leads the squad with 12 blocks, six more than any other Bulldog.
Just three games into her collegiate career, Minshew is already producing at a high level. Through three matches, Minshew leads the team with 32 kills and five service aces, and also ranks No. 4 with 20 digs. Minshew boosted State to a comeback win Saturday against Western Illinois with 17 kills against the Leathernecks.
