HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Despite a challenge to open the Southern Miss Classic, the 2019 Mississippi State Volleyball team remains perfect in 2019.
MSU improved to 4-0 on the year with a four-set victory over New Orleans Friday, September 6 at Reed Green Coliseum, backed by double-doubles from senior Alleah Stamatis and Callie Minshew.
MSU dropped the first set, 25-18, before winning the next two in back-and-forth 26-24 battles. The Bulldogs pulled away early in the fourth and final set, and staved off a late UNO run, taking it 25-19.
"Wins sure don't come easy and I really need to applaud New Orleans," head coach Julie Darty said. "They had a great game plan on us and were coming for us today. I'm so proud that we were able to gut it out and win. We just found a way to get the job done. It wasn't always pretty, but we did it."
State has won each of its last two matches despite starting down a set in both.
"It's really nice to see lots of new faces step up for us," Darty said. "We understand this is a long process, we trust it and the girls are so committed to one another and this program. They're a fun, gritty group, and the chemistry is great. I think that translated on to the court for us today because you can't have success without trust and you can tell they trust one another."
Stamatis earned her second double-double of the campaign and the 18th of her career, putting together 39 assists, which tied a season high, and 10 digs. Her first double-double came in the season opener against Chattanooga.
Minshew collected 17 kills for the second-straight match alongside a season-high 10 digs for her first-career double-double. The freshman has totaled a team-leading 49 kills this season.
"Alleah's leadership and drive was big for us again, and Callie just gets better every time she steps on the court," Darty said.
Gabby Waden was also lethal up front, collecting a career-high 14 kills at a .423 hitting percentage. The sophomore has earned at least nine kills in every match this season.
Freshman Makenzie Jordan started at libero for the first time in her career and tallied 22 digs for the Bulldog defense. State won the dig battle, with 68 to UNO's 61.
"Makenzie did a fantastic job filling in at the libero spot and playing that role for us," Darty said.
First Set (New Orleans 25, Mississippi State 18)
Mississippi State took an early lead on a Callie Minshew kill for an 8-7 advantage, but the Bulldogs couldn't hold on, surrendering the lead on an attacking error as UNO grabbed a 14-13 advantage. The Privateers outscored MSU 11-5 from that point.
Waden earned four of her kills in the opening frame.
Second Set (Mississippi State 26, New Orleans 24)
Waden's fifth kill of the match gave State a 3-0 start in the second set. MSU didn't allow a New Orleans lead until a service ace found a spot to put the Privateers in front, 18-17. State stole back the advantage at 24-23 on an attacking error, helped on by a block from Waden and Paige Shaw. Waden made it 25-24 with her eighth kill in front of another UNO error that sealed the first point for the Bulldogs.
Minshew tallied seven kills in the second set.
Third Set (Mississippi State 26, New Orleans 24)
The third frame sat tied on 15 occassions, once again needing extra points to decide it. Minshew broke the 24-24 tied with her 14th kill and State won the final point on an attacking error.
Fourth Set (Mississippi State 25, New Orleans 19)
Looking to close it out, State got off to a 9-3 start before New Orleans took a timeout. State extended its lead to 11 points, but UNO didn't call it in, eventually cutting the deficit to four at 23-19. Amarrah Cooks turned in a kill to get to match point, where another attacking error by UNO ended the match.
