Storylines
- This will be MSU's first game against a ranked opponent this season. The last time State earned a road SEC win was in 2017 at No. 24 Texas A&M (35-14). MSU's 34-29 win at No. 8 LSU in 2014 was its last road win over a top-10 team.
- State won last year's meeting against Auburn in Starkville, 23-9. The win was the Bulldogs' largest margin of victory over a top-10 team since beating No. 2 Auburn, 38-23, on Oct. 11, 2014, a game that catapulted MSU to its first No. 1 ranking. Since that memorable season, MSU has produced five victories over top-10 teams.
- The Bulldogs have won four out of their last five SEC games and six of their last eight, dating back to last season.
- QB Garrett Shrader was named SEC Freshman of the Week after leading MSU past Kentucky, 28-13, in its SEC opener last Saturday in his first career start. He accounted for 305 yards of total offense, including rushing for 125 yards on 11 carries, and was an efficient 17-of-22 for 180 yards through the air.
- QB Garrett Shrader is the first MSU offensive freshman to earn SEC Freshman of the Week honors since RB LaDarius Perkins on Nov. 27, 2010. He is the first overall since LB Leo Lewis' performance in the Egg Bowl on Nov. 28, 2016, and he is the first MSU true freshman quarterback to earn the honor. QB Tyler Russell captured it as a redshirt freshman on Sept. 4, 2010 vs. Memphis.
- RB Kylin Hill is arguably the most dominant rusher in the nation so far this season and on his way to being one of the most prolific running backs in MSU history. Hill has rushed 91 times for an SEC-best 551 yards (6.1 yards per carry) and five touchdowns. He leads or is tied for the SEC lead in nine different categories and is top five in the FBS in six.
- MSU and Ohio State are the only teams in the Power 5 to rush for 200+ yards in four games this season. Under head coach Joe Moorhead, State has topped the 200-yard rushing mark 12 times out of 17 games. State's 12 games with 200+ rushing yards since 2018 are tied for the most in the SEC and tied for second most in the Power 5 during that stretch.
- DC Bob Shoop's defense has recorded a takeaway in 20 straight games, which is the second longest active streak in the nation. The streak began at Arkansas on Nov. 18, 2017. State has totaled 38 takeaways during the streak.
- S Brian Cole II leads the SEC in tackles for loss (5.5) which is also tied for second most in the FBS among defensive backs. Cole also has a team-high 2.0 sacks, which is the most in the SEC among defensive backs. He has recorded at least 1.0 tackle for loss in three of four games this season and has a sack in two of the last three weeks. Cole is also tied for the SEC lead in total pressures with a pair of sacks and three hurries, according to Pro Football Focus.
