Bulldogs Fall At No. 7 Auburn
September 28, 2019 | Football
AUBURN, Ala. – Mississippi State was handed its second setback of the 2019 campaign Saturday night as the Bulldogs ran into No. 7 Auburn, in a 56-23 loss at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
A 30-yard rush by running back Jatarvious Whitlow on Auburn's (5-0, 2-0 SEC) first possession set the tone for the night. The Tigers jumped out to an early 21-0 lead in the first, a deficit that proved to be difficult for the Bulldogs (3-2, 1-1 SEC) to overcome.
Garrett Shrader hit on 12-of-23 of his pass attempts for 209 yards and two touchdowns. On the ground, the freshman amassed 89 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries.
With 2:20 left on the clock in the first quarter, Shrader connected with Stephen Guidry across the middle from nine yards out for State's first score of the game.
To start the second quarter, Whitlow plunged three yards into the endzone to bring the Tigers' lead to 28-6 before a Jace Christmann 27-yard field goal cut the advantage to 19.
Auburn tallied 21 unanswered points in the second and third quarters, bringing their advantage to 49-9.
In the third quarter, State's leading receiever, Osirus Mitchell reeled in a 21-yard touchdown pass from Shrader, his fourth touchdown reception of the season.
Shrader completed an eight-play, 78-yard march with a seven-yard rush into the endzone to conclude scoring in the contest.
Senior linebacker, Leo Lewis came away with two fumble recoveries, while freshman Aaron Brule tallied one. MSU's defense entered the contest with an SEC-leading 11 takeaways, including seven fumbles gained, which ties the FBS lead.
Leading the way for the Bulldog defensive effort was Lewis who registered eight total tackles, ignited by seven solo stops. C.J. Morgan followed with eight total tackles of his own.
MSU will now enjoy its first off date (Oct. 5) of the 2019 season. The Bulldogs return to action Oct. 12, travelling to meet Tennessee (1-3, 0-1 SEC) for the first time since 2012, the first clash in Knoxville since 2008. Game time and television info for the Bulldog-Volunteer matchup is expected to be announced Monday. The Vols host No. 3 Georgia on Oct. 5.
