May 19, 2019 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – After a successful 2018-19 campaign, Mississippi State women's tennis player Emma Antonaki will open competition in the 2019 NCAA Singles Championship Monday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida.
Â
The MSU true freshman, ranked 59th nationally, will meet North Carolina State's 10th-ranked junior Anna Rogers – a 9-16 alphabetical seed – at 1:30 p.m. ET Monday afternoon. The two players have never met. The match can be followed via live video and stats at tournament headquarters.
Â
Antonaki was named the ITA Southern Region's Rookie of the Year on Saturday. The Athens, Greece, product is currently the highest-ranked freshman in the ITA Southern Region. Ranked as high as 55th nationally in her freshman campaign, she was named the No. 1 alternate to the 2019 NCAA Singles field on April 30 and the rookie learned this past week she had officially been entered into the 64-player field. She is only the third freshman in program history to earn a bid to the NCAA Individual Championships – just the second ever in singles.
Â
Named 2019 All-SEC Second Team, Antonaki was also named to the 2019 All-SEC Freshman squad. She has notched eight ranked wins this year, three in the Top 25, and leads MSU in overall wins (45) this season - 25-12 in singles and 20-13 in doubles.
Â
Rogers is 30-14 overall in singles in her third campaign in Raleigh. She was 20-8 at the No. 1 position while leading the Wolfpack to the NCAA Round of 16 as a team. She has 17 ranked wins this season, including seven against Top 40 foes.
Â
The Stamford, Connecticut, product is also a top 8 seed in this year's NCAA Doubles draw with partner Alana Smith. With those singles and doubles seedings, Rogers and Smith will become the first All-Americans in N.C. State women's tennis program history.
