MSU Freshman Antonaki Falls In NCAA Singles Debut
May 20, 2019 | Women's Tennis
ORLANDO, Fla. – Mississippi State women's tennis player Emma Antonaki fell in her NCAA debut Monday, capping an overall successful season for the Bulldog true freshman.
Ranked 59th nationally, Antonaki fell 6-3, 6-2 to North Carolina State's 10th-ranked junior Anna Rogers – a 9-16 alphabetical seed – in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Singles Championship at the USTA National Campus.
The Athens, Greece, native jumped out to a quick start, breaking Rogers in the first game of the match. But Rogers answered. The players stayed on serve until Rogers led 4-3, when the NCSU star broke and then held to grab the first set 6-3.
In the second, the players were deadlocked at 1-1 before Rogers reeled off three-straight games (two breaks) to go up 4-1. Antonaki broke to fight back to 4-2, but Rogers answered again to go up 5-2. Antonaki pushed the final game to a deciding point, but Rogers was able to hold serve to claim the set and the match 6-3, 6-2.
Named 2019 All-SEC Second Team, Antonaki was also named to the 2019 All-SEC Freshman squad. She notched eight ranked wins this year, three in the Top 25, and led MSU in overall wins (45) - 25-13 in singles and 20-13 in doubles.
Antonaki was named the ITA Southern Region's Rookie of the Year on Saturday and is currently the highest-ranked freshman in the ITA Southern Region. Ranked as high as 55th nationally in her freshman campaign, she was named the No. 1 alternate to the 2019 NCAA Singles field on April 30 and the rookie learned just last week she had officially been entered into this week's 64-player field. She became only the third freshman in MSU women's tennis history to earn a bid to the NCAA Individual Championships – and just the second ever in singles.
