ST. SIMONS ISLAND – All but one team shot an under-par round during the final round of stroke at the SEC Championship Friday.
The Mississippi State men's golf team was one of many teams to fall victim to poor conditions on the par-70, 7,005-yard Sea Island Golf Club Seaside Course. After rainfall Thursday night and early Friday morning, the soaked course came alongside wind gusts to challenge the SEC golfers.
MSU shot 28-over par in the final round to finish 13th, falling short of an eighth-place performance needed to qualify for the tournament's quarterfinal match play.
Junior Garrett Johnson and senior Austin Rose finished tied as MSU's best individual performers for the tournament, carding 9-over 219s. Junior Peng Pichaikool finished a stroke behind them, while Ford Clegg and Ross Bell shot 14-over and 18-over, respectively.
On Friday, Johnson holed his third eagle of the tournament on 15, a total better than any team could boast.
Through SEC Championship play, the program will hope to qualify for NCAA Regional play. The NCAA Championship field will be announced live on the Golf Channel on Wednesday, May 1, at 8 p.m. CT.

MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith:
"Today was obviously a tough day for our team. The conditions were extremely difficult with high winds, firm greens and difficult hole locations. Those conditions exposed some of our weaknesses. However, I am so proud of the fight we gave all the way until the final putt. That tells me a lot about the character of this team. We need to take a good look at how we can improve, especially in tough conditions. I love this team and would go to battle with them any day."
