SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. – A much needed rally on its final nine holes keeps Mississippi State men's golf in contention at the NCAA Louisville Regional after Monday's opening round.
State shot even par on the back nine, coming up holes one through nine in the afternoon following a 10-over par performance on the front nine of the par-71, 7,217-yard University of Louisville Golf Club.
The Bulldogs finished ninth after the first round of play with a 10-over 294 18-hole score, eight strokes out of the fifth-place spot. MSU will need to make up that ground Tuesday and Wednesday to qualify for NCAA Championship play. The Golf Dawgs will start Tuesday's round two from hole No. 1 at 7:25 a.m. CT. Live results will be available via Golfstat.com.
"I am really proud of the fight and resiliency we showed today," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said.
In his third regional appearance, Junior Peng Pichaikool steadied the squad on Monday, carding an even 71 in round one. He sits tied for 16th on the player leaderboard. Freshman Ford Clegg was right behind him at 1-over par. Clegg opened the day with no bogeys through his first eight holes. Both players shot even scores on the back nine.
Junior Garrett Johnson found trouble on the front nine, shooting 5-over for the section. However, he bounced back after making the turn and played 2-under the rest of the way for a total 3-over 18-hole score.
"Peng was solid all day and Ford did a nice job of staying patient," Smith said. "Garrett showed what kind of character he is made of with a nice bounce back on his back nine."
Austin Rose and Ben Nelson each shot 6-over 77s Monday.
Auburn leads the field at the NCAA Louisville Regional field after boasting an 8-under 276 in round one. Louisville's Matthias Schmid reigns atop the player leaderboard via a 5-under 66.

"I am really proud of the fight and resiliency we showed today. We made the turn at 10-over par and found a way to play the back nine in even par as a team. Peng was solid all day and Ford did a nice job of staying patient. Garrett showed what kind of character he is made of with a nice bounce back on his back nine. We need a good round tomorrow and it is going to have to be a full team effort. We need all five guys in it the entire day. We need to make sure we come out of the gate a little faster and that we remain focused on what we do and nothing else."
