ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Mississippi State men's golf has two days to bounce back from a rough start Wednesday at the SEC Championship.
MSU shot a 10-over 290 in the opening round at the par-72, 7,005-yard Sea Island Golf Club Seaside Course to finish the day alone for 12th. The Bulldogs sit in front of two Golfstat Top 50 teams in No. 25 Alabama and No. 40 Florida.
Thursday will bring a new round of 18-hole stroke play. Nine strokes currently separate MSU from an eighth-place finish needed to qualify for match play after Friday's final round. State will turn its attention to round two at 8 a.m. CT Thursday from the 10th hole tee.
Junior Garrett Johnson and senior Austin Rose both shot 2-over-par 72s to finish Wednesday as MSU's best performers. Johnson's day was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 15th hole. He was one of just two SEC players to sink an eagle in round one. Rose finished hot with a 1-under score on his final nine holes.
Junior Peng Pichaikool and freshman Ford Clegg each carded 73s in round one, while senior Ross Bell ended the day at 6-over par.

MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith:
"I thought we came out a little tentative this morning to begin our round. We did a nice job of hanging in there but need to come out with some more fire tomorrow. We need to do a better job of playing disciplined golf. I thought we put ourselves in some tough spots too often. We are not far off from putting it all together. This tournament is far from over. Tomorrow is a new day and a new opportunity, and we can't wait to get back out there."
