ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – It's postseason time for the Golf Dawgs.
The Mississippi State men's golf team is set to begin play at the SEC Championship Wednesday on Sea Island Golf Club in Georgia.
The event will open with three days of round play, 18 holes each day. Following Friday's round three, the top eight teams will compete in match play, with the quarterfinals and semifinals taking place Saturday, and the championship on Sunday.
Live results will be available via Golfstat throughout the tournament. SEC Network will broadcast Sunday's match play championship round live, while Saturday's semifinal round will appear online at SEC Network+. Wednesday's opening round is scheduled to begin at 6:30 a.m. CT.
MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith made one change to his lineup card after his team closed the regular season with a strong fifth-place finish at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship in mid-April. Junior Peng Pichaikool, freshman Ford Clegg, junior Garrett Johnson and senior Austin Rose will occupy the top four spots. Senior Ross Bell, who tied for 10th place at Old Waverly, will take over in the fifth spot.
"This week is about us and nothing else," MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith said. "We have to choose to focus on what we can control. This week comes down to us doing the simple things well, staying in the moment and trusting our preparation and process. If we win in those phases, we will be successful.
"We talked a lot in the days leading up to this about playing fearless golf and trusting one another," Smith said. "We are looking forward to this next opportunity."
State's lineup for the SEC Championship represents 17 of the team's 19 total individual top-15 finishes in the 2018-19 season. Pichaikool and Clegg each tallied six over the regular season.
Pichaikool, Clegg and Johnson all rank among the SEC's top 30 golfers according to Golfstat.com.
Pichaikool leads MSU with a 71.04 season stroke average. The Bangkok, Thailand, native totaled two runner-up performances over the 2018-19 campaign. In 2017, Pichaikool finished tied for seventh at the SEC Championship as a freshman.
Clegg will look to have a similar performance. In his last seven events, Clegg has captured six top-15 performances, the second-most of any SEC freshman.
MSU will need Johnson's momentum to keep rolling. He was State's best finisher in the regular season finale at Old Waverly, taking a share of third with a 9-under 207. In March, Johnson won the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate with the same score, a career-best 54-hole total.
As Rose and Bell wind down their campaigns, they have another shot to contribute to their team at the SEC Championship. Both players are coming off of top-20 finishes at Old Waverly.
Mississippi State has won two team SEC Championships coming in back-to-back seasons in 1996 and 1997. Graham Davidson is the only MSU player to win the SEC individual title.
