TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Mississippi State logged plenty of laps under the lights on Thursday night as the Bulldogs' distance corps registered six new personal bests to open the Crimson Tide Invitational.
Luke Zacharias placed third in the men's 5000m with a personal-best 14:59.10, leading a pack of Bulldogs that took eight of the next nine places. Zacharias barely edged out fourth-place finisher Lake Spradling, who ran a personal-best 15:00.40, and Chandler Underwood who crossed the line four hundredths of a second later.
Eryk Yunk also recorded a personal best in the 5000m, finishing in 15:23.24 to shave nearly four seconds off his best from last year.
State's women had an even better night on the track with four of MSU's five runners breaking their season bests and three running personal bests.
In the women's 5000m, Carly Terp took more than 15 seconds off her lifetime best to finish sixth in 17:45.21. In the seeded 1500m, all three Bulldog women ran season bests. Sylvia Russell clocked a personal-best 4:28.90, and Shannon Fair crossed the line in a personal-best 4:30.04.
The evening opened with the women's hammer throw where Francesca Chambers crushed her previous personal-best by more than nine meters (29-6.0). Chambers launched the implement 42.77m (140-4.0) on her first throw of the night, then improved with her second attempt to 44.31m (145-4.0).
MSU returns to action in Tuscaloosa on Friday morning with field events starting at 9 a.m. CT. The Bulldogs' first event on the track sees another group of distance runners toe the line in the unseeded sections of the 1500m.
