STARKVILLE – Another strong doubles performance served as the launchpad for another win on Sunday, as the No. 3 Mississippi State men's tennis team took down South Florida, 6-1, at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
The Bulldogs (4-0) extended their streak of winning the doubles point to 15 matches dating back to 2018 and used that momentum to take five first sets en route to defeating the Bulls (2-4). MSU has yet to drop a doubles set in 2019. The win marked State's 24th-straight home non-conference victory, which leads the Southeastern Conference.
"I thought Nuno (Borges) and Strahinja (Rakic) were pushed today on court 1 and did a great job of bouncing back to put their match in a comfortable position," head coach Matt Roberts said. "In singles, I was really pleased with how we competed, overall. It's all about controlling our thoughts and our self-talk. Today was another good match for us to commit to that and use that to fuel us and give us confidence out there."
The Bulldogs earned another quick advantage in doubles, with seventh-ranked Niclas Braun and Giovanni Oradini notching a 6-1 win against USF's Jakub Wojcik and Ivan Yatsuk on court 2. A few moments later, Trevor Foshey and Gregor Ramskogler improved to 8-0 on the year as a tandem with a 6-2 victory over Sergio Gomez-Montesa and Tobias Sonne on court 3 to clinch the doubles point.
"We're just keeping it simple," Ramskogler said. "We have a simple game plan and execute it pretty well."
State's 36th-ranked Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic trailed 4-3 in a tight battle with Alberto Barroso-Campos and Pierre Luquet on court 1 at the time the point was clinched.
In singles, the senior Rakic pushed MSU's lead to 2-0 with a quick 6-2, 6-1 victory on court 3 against Wojcik. Later, Ramksogler posted his first career singles win in dual match action with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over the Bulls' Sean Burnette on court 6, overcoming a 3-0 deficit in the second set to do so. The rookie from Austria improved to 4-0 combined in dual matches.
"My first singles match on the home courts was unbelievable in front of such a good crowd," Ramskogler said. "I thought I played well. I got a little behind in the second set after (Burnette) changed his game plan. I adapted pretty well, responded with a break and served it out well, so it was a pretty good match for me."
The 11th-ranked All-American Borges then clinched the match on court 1, downing USF's 43rd-ranked Barroso-Campos by a 6-4, 6-1 mark, overcoming a service break to take the close first set.
USF ended the shutout bid when Sergio Gomez-Montesa won a tight 7-6(5), 6-3 decision over MSU's 78th-ranked Florian Broska on court 5.
Playing at the No. 4 singles spot for the first time since his freshman year, the 93rd-ranked senior Foshey settled in nicely, holding off USF's Yatsuk 7-6(5), 6-4 to push State's lead to 5-1. On court 2, Oradini capped off the match with a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(6) victory over the Bulls' Luquet.
"We grew as a team in these four home matches," Roberts said. "The guys said that the more matches they get, the tougher they get. That's so awesome to hear that they just want more matches, because they know that with more matches, the more resilient we get and the more trust we have in ourselves and each other. This month is going to be amazing for us to really be challenged with a lot of road matches. It's going to be great for the guys to be tested, and we're excited about that."
Next Up For MSU …
MSU will hit the road for the rest of February, first traveling to Lubbock, Texas, to take on Texas Tech (Feb. 8, 4 p.m. CT) and No. 17 Tulane (Feb. 9, 2 p.m.) before returning home to prepare for action in the 2019 ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Chicago the following week. The Bulldogs will be back home on March 1, hosting Vanderbilt at 3 p.m. to open SEC play.
