Jones Earns All-Region Recognition, MSU Women Place 14th and Men Place 17th

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Mississippi State women's and men's cross country team earned 14th-and 17th place finishes, respectively, in the 6K and 10K races at the NCAA South Region Championships held at Apalachee Regional Park.

Stephen Jones shattered his personal best, set at the 2017 NCAA South Regionals, by 1:37.7 with a time of 30:33.5. Jones turned in the Bulldogs' highest finish at a men's regional meet since at least 2005 with an 11th-place nod. With his performance, Jones became the sixth men's All-Region selection in school history.

Sylvia Russell paced the women, finishing 34th with a time of 21:05.9. After Russell's finish, Silvia De La Pena Garibay (91st), Ava Weems (95th), Kristy Terp (99th) and Breja Hooks (106th) rounded out the top five for MSU.

For the men, Lake Spradling was the second Bulldog to cross the line, finishing 77th in 32:19.4. In addition to Jones' personal best, Luke Zacharias shaved 2:40.2 off his time as the rest of the squad made their debuts in the 10K. Â

Host and 12th-ranked Florida State took the team title in the women's 6K with 42 points and three of the top 10 finishers. No. 11 Ole Miss landed at the top of the leaderboard for the men with 69 points.

Jones awaits his postseason fate as he waits to hear if he has earned a bid to participate in the 2019 NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana.

The NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field and Cross Country Committee will announce the qualifiers to the DI cross country championships on Saturday, Nov. 16. The selection show begins at 4 p.m. CT on NCAA.com.
