COLUMBIA, Mo. – Mississippi State volleyball just couldn't find its way against a Tiger strong attack on Sunday (Oct. 27), as the Bulldogs fell in straight sets to No. 25 Missouri at the Hearnes Center in Columbia.
Â
The Bulldogs (12-10, 1-9 SEC) played Missouri (14-4, 6-3 SEC) close for the most part in each set, and forced extra points in a 27-25 loss in the second set, but couldn't break through.
Â
"Today was a tough fight for the Dawgs," MSU volleyball coach Julie Darty said. "I really liked the way we never stopped fighting and really showed a lot of grit with a very talented Missouri team. They're one of the top teams in the country for a reason, but we are showing that we can hang and compete with anyone. Overall, I thought that the effort was consistent, and we were in it until the very end. That second set, going to extra points was huge.
Â
"I'm really proud of the team today for sticking to the game plan and giving it their all. Against a team like Mizzou we are going to have to dig some balls and defensively, we didn't do that early on. We came alive in the third set and did a good job of earning transition opportunities by digging balls. From the service line we did a great job of putting pressure on them."
Â
First Set (Missouri 25, Mississippi State 19)
Â
After Missouri scored the first three points of the match, the Bulldogs went on a 5-0 run to gain an early 5-3 advantage, emphasized by a kill from Amarrah Cooks. The Tigers separated themselves with a five-point scoring run of their own to get to a 15-11 cushion. State brought it close but was never able to knot it back up as Mizzou started 1-0 in the match.
Â
Second Set (Missouri 27, Mississippi State 25)
Â
The Bulldogs forced the Tigers into extra points, but just couldn't tie the match. Missouri reached set point with a 24-21 lead, but a 3-0 Bulldog run tied the frame. After the Bulldogs re-tied it a 25-25, Missouri escaped with a kill and an MSU error.
Â
Third Set (Missouri 25, Mississippi State 18)
Â
A Kanani Price service ace gave Mississippi State a 6-5 lead after Missouri got off to a 4-0 run to begin the final set. Three-straight points gave Mizzou a 14-12 lead, and the Tigers held on to it for the remainder of the frame to finish the victory.
Up Next
Mississippi State sets its focus on Friday (Nov. 1) when it travels east to take on Auburn at 6 p.m. CT. The Bulldogs defeated the Tigers in four sets at the Newell-Grissom Building earlier this week (Oct. 25).
Â
"I'm excited to keep building and keep working hard," Darty said. "We have a lot of season left and we are getting better every day.
