Mississippi State Volleyball Executes Road Sweep at Auburn

By Austin Coats, Graduate Assistant/Communications
AUBURN, Ala. – Julie Darty's first-career SEC road victory can be defined by one word: sweep.
Not only did Mississippi State volleyball (13-10, 2-9 SEC) win in straight sets at Auburn (6-14, 0-9 SEC) Friday night (Nov. 1), MSU swept the season series with the Tigers after beating them in four sets a week earlier in Starkville.
"What a huge win for the Bulldogs," Darty said. "We came in with a laser-like focus and it just seemed like we were calm and composed from the beginning, even when we had some stretches when we let Auburn get ahead by a couple points. We held it together and just decided to gut it out."
The victory was MSU's second road sweep of the season as the Bulldogs took down Southern Miss in Hattiesburg on Sept. 6. Additionally, it was State's first conference road sweep since Sept. 23, 2016 at Tennessee.
The second win in 2019 conference play doubles MSU's total in 2018, Darty's first season at the helm.
"That goal was kind of lingering in the back of everybody's head," Darty said. "I'm really proud of the team effort tonight."
Junior libero Kanani Price led the Bulldog defense with 15 digs. Outside hitters Callie Minshew and Paige Shaw also turned in double-digit dig performances, as each student-athlete tallied 10.
"I'm really proud of our defense and our serve and set efforts to be able to get everybody involved," Darty said. "We have to keep the defensive mindset to maintain who we are and for us to have those signature wins, and this was definitely a statement win."
Shaw had a strong match overall as the sophomore added six kills, two service aces and three solo blocks.
Alleah Stamatis just missed a double-double, picking up 28 assists and eight digs. The senior has nine double-doubles on the season.
"Alleah had a great night moving the ball around and keeping everybody honest," Darty said.
Senior Amarrah Cooks led all Bulldog attackers with eight kills. Minshew and sophomore Gabby Waden each had seven.
First Set (Mississippi State 27, Auburn 25)
Auburn forced Mississippi State to extra points in the opening frame, but the Bulldogs pulled through to earn their first opening set victory of conference play. State owned a .343 hitting percentage in the first set, and Stamatis had four kills, 10 assists, four digs and a block assists in that frame alone.
Second Set (Mississippi State 25, Auburn 20)
Streaks were the story of the second set. Ahead 14-11, Mississippi State scored seven of the next eight points to improve its advantage to 21-12. However, Auburn punched back and came within one on an 8-0 run. Paige Shaw stopped the bleeding with a kill, followed by a service ace. MSU closed the set on a 4-0 scoring streak.
Third Set (Mississippi State 25, Auburn 22)
State kept the momentum in the final set, never allowing the Tigers to take a lead. Back-to-back Auburn attack errors closed a 5-0 MSU run that brought the score to 11-4, MSU. The Bulldogs held off Auburn from there on to complete the sweep.
