STARKVILLE – A city traditionally known for horse races will feature a different type of race this weekend, as the Mississippi State cross country team is set to toe the line in Saturday's Greater Louisville Classic.
The meet, hosted by the Louisville Sports Commission, will be held at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Kentucky—home of the NCAA Championships in 2012, 2015 and 2017. State's men will open up the day with the Gold 8K race at 9:30 a.m. ET followed by the women's Gold 5K at 10:15.
"We're looking forward to getting back to Louisville," head coach Houston Franks said. "We've had success here in the past, coming here twice in 2015, so we hope to continue that this weekend."
Three years ago, MSU took fifth at the Pre-NCAA meet and 17th at the NCAA Championships, both in Louisville.
In this week's USTFCCCA regional rankings, the Bulldog women were ranked fifth in the South Region—the third-highest Southeastern Conference team in the region.
State is one of 26 teams in the women's race that features two other Southeastern Conference foes: Auburn and Kentucky. Two of the Bulldogs' toughest tests of the season also await them in the Derby City in No. 10 Michigan and SMU, who received votes in Tuesday's national poll. MSU is also one of 10 South Region teams in the meet.
In the men's race, State will compete against 24 other teams from around the country, including one ranked team in No. 19 Middle Tennessee State.
Live results for the meet can be found here.
"This weekend gives us a great opportunity to prove ourselves against some very strong teams, including one of the top teams in the nation," Franks said. "This is the time of year where our competition gets tougher every meet, and I know our group is ready for the challenge."
Last Time Out For MSU …
On Sept. 15, MSU enjoyed another successful day at the Montevallo Falcon Classic, highlighted by the women taking the top spot led by Mia Meydrich's second-place finish. The senior from New Orleans, Louisiana, led three Bulldogs in the top 10 in her first cross country race for the Maroon and White in nearly two years.
Next Up For MSU …
After returning from Louisville, the Bulldogs will prepare for another challenging test at the Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M on Oct. 13. The meet, held at the Aggies' Watts Cross Country Course in College Station, is slated for a 9 a.m. CT start with the men's 8K race followed by the women's 6K at 9:45.
