LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Fifteen personal bests highlighted the Mississippi State cross country team's day at the Greater Louisville Classic held at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park.
Nine of MSU's 10 runners in the men's race set collegiate-best marks, as the Bulldogs finished 20th in the men's 8K. In the women's race, State finished ninth as six of its nine runners set personal bests.
"We had some good personal bests on both teams today, and that is a good sign," head coach Houston Franks said. "However, cross country—unlike track—isn't just about times. It is about place and beating the person next to you."
Michigan, the nation's 10th-ranked team, took the team title in the women's 5K with 46 points. The Bulldogs were led by junior Stephanie Peterson, who shattered her previous 5K best by 13 seconds with a mark of 17:41.5. Senior Mia Meydrich was the second Bulldog to cross the finish at 18:10.5, finishing 54th overall.
In addition to Peterson's personal-best, Charlotte Cayton-Smith, Sydney Steely, Emma Tucker, Alex Wallace and Ava Weems all set collegiate bests.
In the men's race, the Maroon and White was led by Chandler Underwood, who finished 83rd with a time of 25:23.3. Joining him in setting personal bests were Blake Beavers, Benjamin Craw, Caden Foos, John Dalton Rohr, Lake Spradling, Zach Weaver, Eryk Yunk and Luke Zacharias.
"I feel like our team is talented enough and fit enough to do some special things this year, but we need get a little hungrier and a little meaner," Franks said. "We aren't doing a good enough job of winning the little one-on-one battles you have in the middle of these races. We have prided ourselves as a team, for the last several years, on being gritty, tenacious, and relentless. We have not quite been ourselves yet this year, but we are getting there."
Next Up For MSU …
The Bulldogs will prepare for their next challenge at the Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M on Oct. 13. The meet, held at the Aggies' Watts Cross Country Course in College Station, is slated for a 9 a.m. CT start with the men's 8K race followed by the women's 6K at 9:45.
