Women’s Tennis Set to Open 2018 Fall Slate

STARKVILLE, Miss. – After last year's successful campaign under head coach Daryl Greenan, the Mississippi State women's tennis team will travel to Greenville, S.C., this weekend for the Debbie Southern Fall Classic beginning Friday, Sept. 21. With Furman as host of the three-day tournament, the Bulldogs will also see competition with players from Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Georgia Tech, North Carolina, Ohio State, Texas, Wake Forest as well as SEC cohorts South Carolina and Vanderbilt.
The Bulldogs enter the fall slate after finishing the 2017-18 season ranked No. 29 nationally and making a school-record fourth-straight NCAA Championship appearance.
MSU will feature two key returning seniors in Janina Braun and Anastasia Rentouli. Each played integral parts in historic team victories in 2018 (leading to the team's 16-11 mark on the year).
Braun clinched three regular season triumphs, as well as State's NCAA First Round victory over William & Mary. The Bulldogs' most notable success came against second-ranked Vanderbilt in a 4-3 upset. Rentouli's match-clinching singles victory made it the highest-ranked team win in program history. Rentouli's junior season concluded with a team-leading 14-4 dual match ledger in singles. Rentouli enters the year ranked No. 125 in singles.
Sophomore Magda Adaloglou and junior Sara Lizariturry also return for the Bulldogs in 2018-19. The pair posted winning 19-15 and 18-12 singles records, respectively, last year. Adaloglou was 13-10 overall in doubles alongside Braun, including a 10-9 record at the No. 2 position. Lizariturry's rookie resume featured four match-clinching wins and a 20-11 singles record.
The Maroon & White will feature several new faces this season as well. Sophomore transfer Meredith Roberts, along with freshmen Emma Antonaki and Tamara Racine, will make their MSU debuts this weekend.
Antonaki comes to Starkville after being the top-ranked player in all of Greece for the last two years, while Racine comes to State after a decorated Canadian juniors career. Roberts is a transfer from TCU and the only Mississippi native on the squad. In 2017, Roberts was the No. 1 recruit in the state and No. 36 nationally.
The Bulldogs are set to start play with doubles this weekend at 9 a.m. ET on Friday. Adaloglou and Antonaki will pair for MSU in Flight 2, Lizariturry and Racine in Flight 3, and Rentouli and Braun in Flight 4.
State will then wrap up the day with singles action starting at 11:30 p.m. ET. Adaloglou is set to compete in Flight 2 for the Bulldogs, Antonaki in Flight 3, Rentouli in Flight 4, Racine in Flight 5, Lizariturry in Flight 7, Braun in Flight 8 and Roberts in Flight 9. Play will continue on Saturday and Sunday.
