Bulldogs Have Solid Start In Day One of Debbie Southern Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Following Friday's opening day of play at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic, the Mississippi State women's tennis team is 3-3 in doubles play and 5-2 in singles after a gritty first day of competition to inaugurate the 2018-19 campaign.

"We got off to a slow start in doubles, but I am proud of the way the girls responded and competed overall," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "The competition is strong here and has provided us with plenty of challenges and opportunities. It was a good day overall [and] definitely a good starting point."

An early start to doubles play began with the MSU tandem of sophomore Magda Adaloglou and freshman Emma Antonaki going undefeated in Flight 2. The pair initially overpowered Furman's Katty Wymouth and Danni Vines 8-3 before outlasting Wake Forest's 59th-ranked Eliza Omirou and Anna Brylin 8-5. The MSU duo will battle Duke's Kaitlyn McCarthy and Ema Lazic Saturday in the semifinal round of that flight's round robin.

In Flight 4, State's senior partnership of Janina Braun and Anastasia Rentouli fell in a tight affair to Wake Forest's Alexis Franco and Saby Nihalani 8-7(3) in the first round. In the consolation quarterfinals, the tandem recovered and muscled through North Carolina's Sophia Patel and Chloe Ouellet-Pizer 8-6. They will face Wake Forest's Mary Meredith and Joanna Zalewski Saturday in the consolation semifinals.

The first-time twosome of junior Sara Lizariturry and freshman Tamara Racine fell to Florida State's Nandini Das and Ariana Rahmanparast 8-3 in their Flight 3 opener. They were then ousted by South Carolina's Megan Davies and Rachel Rohrabacker 8-1 in consolation play. Lizariturry and Racine will counter Furman's Georgie Walker and Julia Adams on Saturday in the seventh-place match.

Following the completion of day one doubles play, MSU proceeded through singles where it started with a strong 5-2 ledger.

In Flight 2, MSU's Adaloglou persevered to post an upset victory over Wake Forest's No. 88 Eliza Omirou 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(6). Adaloglou will meet Duke's No. 84 Kaitlyn McCarthy on Saturday in the semifinals of that draw.

The rookie Antonaki made a statement to begin her MSU career, going undefeated in doubles and singles after a three-set come-from-behind thriller - 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-2 - over FSU's No. 55 Ana Oparenovic. She will face USC's No. 96 Mia Horvit Saturday in the semifinals.

MSU's 125^th-ranked Rentouli triumphed over Danni Vines of host Furman 6-1, 6-1 to open play in Flight 4. She will prepare for UNC's No. 82 Chloe Ouellet-Pizer in the semifinals on Saturday.

State's true freshman Racine dominated Clemson's Ally Miller 6-2, 6-3 in her Flight 5 opener and MSU singles debut Friday. She meets Florida State's Julia Mikulski in Saturday's semis.

In Flight 7, State veteran Lizariturry overpowered Wake Forest's Mary Caroline Meredith 6-3, 6-1, making it the Bulldogs' third straight-set singles victory on the day. She advances to Saturday's semifinals to battle Ohio State's Danielle Wolf.

The Bulldogs' Braun fell in a three-set marathon to Wake Forest's Peyton Pesavento 6-7(3), 7-5, 7-5. Saturday, the State senior is set to play Georgia Tech's Valeriya Deminova in the consolation semifinals.

In Flight 9, after receiving a bye, sophomore transfer Meredith Roberts fell to Vanderbilt's Lauren Gish in a three-set heartbreaker 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(3).

The Bulldogs will be back in action for day two of the Debbie Southern Fall Classic beginning with doubles at 9 a.m. ET on Saturday.
