STARKVILLE – Looking to build on a solid outing in its season opener, the Mississippi State cross country team is set for its second meet of the year. Saturday, the Bulldogs head to Montevallo, Alabama, for the Falcon Classic.
The meet will be held at the University of Montevallo Cross Country Course, with the men's 8K race starting at 8 a.m. CT followed by the women's 5K at 9 a.m. Last season, the Bulldogs emerged victorious in dominant fashion, earning the top three finishes in the women's race and the top two spots on the men's side.
"We saw some good things at Memphis from our younger athletes, and I'm eager to see their progress moving forward at Montevallo tomorrow," head coach Houston Franks said. "Our goal is always to get better every time out, and this meet is another step in that process."
In this week's USTFCCCA regional rankings, the Bulldog women were ranked fourth in the South Region—up one spot from their preseason mark. State was also the No. 2 Southeastern Conference team in the region.
MSU's men will also be running Saturday in the 8K race that features Alabama State, Florida A&M and Jacksonville State.
Saturday's women's 5K features Alabama A&M, Alabama State, Florida A&M and Jacksonville State. Four Bulldogs—seniors Shannon Fair, Mia Meydrich and Alyssa Staubach and sophomore Alon Lewis will make their 2018 debuts.
Live results for the meet can be found at XpressTiming.com.
"It's going to be great to see some of our veterans race for the first time this season," Franks said. "They've been working hard, and I know they're chomping at the bit to get out there and show what they can do."
