Price-Weimer Wins 1500m Gold, Arop Takes 800m Silver
May 13, 2018 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Rhianwedd Price-Weimer added a conference title to go alongside her 2015 NCAA crown in the 1500m on Sunday night. Marco Arop also medaled, taking silver in the 800m while breaking his own Mississippi State freshman record.
Price-Weimer was in third place entering the final 200m, but the SEC champion and NCAA leader surged through the turn and led the entire way down the homestretch. She finished in 4:18.79.
"I don't really know what happened, but I think maybe it was a mental thing where I was dying," Price-Weimer said. "I knew with 150m to go that we've done a lot of pace change work at 150m. I just knew that I needed to dig in and go now."
Scoring in one event wasn't enough for Price-Weimer. She capped her night with a fifth-place finish and four more points in the 5000m. In her first collegiate 5000m on the oval, she clocked a 16:42.36.
Arop shattered his freshman record with a time of 1:47.45. Among Canadians, Arop is second only to former Bulldog and 2016 SEC champion Brandon McBride this year.
"I knew (Texas A&M's) Dixon would go out fast, so I told him to stay on the gas," head coach Steve Dudley said. "If he'd gone any slower Ole Miss would've out-kicked him. That's how we want to run it, fast early on so we don't have to worry about anyone having a kick."
The Bulldogs scored a point in the men's 4x100m relay, but lost Ro'Derick Spears along the way. Running the anchor leg, he pulled up with a tight hamstring and would not run the 110m hurdles final. MSU also scored in both 4x400m relays.
Alon Lewis took seventh in the women's 800m for two points. With three men in 400m hurdles final, MSU was guaranteed at least six points from the event. The Bulldogs got 11 after Rasheed Tatham and Charles Brockman III went back-to-back with fourth- and fifth-place finishes. Malcum Tatum took seventh.
The Bulldog men finished in 11th with 39 points, while the women were 12th with 30 points. MSU will travel to the NCAA East Prelims in Tampa, Fla. on May 24-26.
