Spears broke a 15-year-old school record in the 110m hurdles.
Bulldogs Advance Three More Runners to Finals on Saturday
May 12, 2018 | Track & Field
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Rhianwedd Price-Weimer, Aaron Phelps and Ro'Derick Spears will join the five Mississippi State athletes who qualified yesterday in Sunday's finals at the SEC Championships in Knoxville, Tenn.
Spears broke a 15-year-old school record in the 110m hurdles to advance. His wind-legal time of 13.65 replaces Kelvin Harris' 2003 mark of 13.73 and would be No. 9 in the NCAA entering the weekend. He joins the three Bulldog men who qualified in the 400m hurdles last night.
"Today was a really good day for us," head coach Steve Dudley said. "That's a huge mark for Ro. We had a couple of good surprises with people we weren't certain would advance. More importantly, we got more athletes qualified for NCAA regionals in Tampa."
Price-Weimer turned in the fastest qualifying time of the day in the 1500m, while Phelps' turn in the men's event was complicated by a collision with 300m to go. Nearly half of his heat went down, and after reviewing the incident and subsequent protests, 20 athletes were allowed through to the final.
Alicia Viveros added to her freshman record, bumping her personal best in the shot put up to 14.41m (47-3.5). In the long jump, Alexis Farley advanced to finals with a personal-best jump of 6.16m (20-2.5).
Through two days, MSU has advanced eight athletes to Sunday's finals while watching nine Bulldogs score points. The men and women have combined for 23 season bests this weekend. MSU's men sit in eighth place, while the women are in sixth.
Tomorrow's action begins with field events at 2 p.m. CT. The entire meet will be available on SEC Network+. The track finals will begin at 5 p.m. when the broadcast will shift to the SEC Network.
