State Wins First Men’s Shuttle Hurdle Championship of America
April 27, 2018 | Track & Field
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – It had been eight years since Mississippi State last won a Championship of America at the Penn Relays. On Friday afternoon, the Bulldogs' hurdlers ended the drought.
Willie-Lionel Reed, Ro'Derick Spears, Herbert Wise III and Charles Brockman III won the shuttle hurdle relay in a school-record and NCAA-leading 57.04. The Bulldogs were in third when Spears took over and gave them a two-stride lead. Wise held that advantage before passing off to Brockman.
The freshman from Plano, Texas, fell behind and trailed the Jamaican UTech by the narrowest of margins coming over the final hurdle, but a final surge and lean at the line gave MSU its first wheel in the event by a tenth of a second.
"It's been a long time since we were able to bring one of these home," head coach Steve Dudley said. "We came here to win races and these four got it done for us today. Herb and Charles probably ran their best legs of their career on that race today."
Moments earlier, the Bulldogs watched Aaron Phelps carry the stick across the line for another wheel in the college division of the men's distance medley relay. Caden Foos, Malcum Tatum, Daniel Nixon and Phelps ran 9:49.85 to edge out New Hampshire and host Penn. Tatum split 47.67 on the 400m leg, half a second quicker than his open 400m personal best.
The Bulldogs nearly claimed a third title in the men's sprint medley relay. Dejon Devroe led coming into the homestretch, but was overtaken by Penn State and Clemson. The three teams all finished within 0.45 seconds of each other. Juston Waters, Karson Kowalchuk, Stephan James and Devroe ran the third-fastest race in school history at 3:15.70.
MSU has qualified for two finals tomorrow. Faith Gilbert finished eighth in the 100m prelims with a time of 12.02 to advance to Saturday's 2:40 p.m. CT final. The men's 4x400m relay will run for the Championship of America at 5 p.m. in the final event of the 124th Penn Relays.
The Bulldogs will be the highlight of the morning's men's javelin competition with the Nos. 1 and 3 throwers in the NCAA in action at 10:15 a.m. NCAA 1500m leader Rhianwedd Price-Weimer will run the Olympic Development mile at 2:05 p.m., and the Bulldogs are one of the favorites in the men's 4x800m relay at 3:30 p.m.
