Bulldogs Grab Second-Straight Top 5 Finish At Schenkel
March 18, 2018 | Men's Golf
STATESBORO, Ga. – Two Top 10 individual performances carried Mississippi State men's golf all weekend as the team finished fourth after Sunday's final round at the Schenkel Invitational.
Tied for fifth, senior Taylor Grant pick up his second-straight Top 5 performance, while fellow senior Taylor Bibbs finished alone in 7th in his first tournament since October.
"I put myself in great positions and capitalized when I could," Grant said. "I tried to build off of my teammates momentum and was glad I could help the team to a good finish."
MSU coach Dusty Smith and his team seem to have found their groove, picking up another Top 5 performance after finishing tied for third at the Tiger Invitational earlier in March.
"Our guys played hard all week, and I'm so proud of them," Smith said. "The seniors once again came up big for the team, but it's what we expect from them."
Sophomore Peng Pichaikool was huge for MSU in the final round, sinking two eagles and four birdies to a final-round total 68. Pichaikool led the field with three eagles this weekend, all coming on different par-5 holes. He shot 1-under through all three rounds into a tie for 23rd.
Freshman Cameron Clarke finished the weekend 7-over for a share of 64th.
Garrett Johnson shot 10-over through the weekend. His 71 on Saturday was important in MSU's team-best 280 in the second round.
Theo Humphrey and Vanderbilt took individual and team crowns at the Schenkel with a collective 29-under performance.
State will try to stay hot next weekend as it plays in the two-day Bighorn Invitational at Bighorn Golf Course in Palm Desert, California, Friday and Saturday. It will be the team's final event before they host the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship April 16-17.

MSU men's golf coach Dusty Smith:
"Our guys played hard all week and I'm so proud of them. Anytime you tee it up with the leader group in the final round of a golf tournament, you learn a lot about the type of men you have on the team. We were tough all week but the way we finished the round today is what we talk about all the time. The seniors once again came up big for the team but it's what we expect from them. Peng found his stride today and played a great round for the team. We have to continue to do the little things well in order for us to be successful. We need to take an honest look at our play this week and continue to learn and grow as a team. We have a very quick turnaround but we are looking forward to competing in California next week."
Senior Taylor Grant:
"We had a great week as a team. We were able to finish off all 3 of our rounds strong and put ourselves in a good position. We played hard and look forward to next week."
"I thought I played really solid all weekend. I put myself in great positions and capitalized when I could. I tried to build off of my teammates momentum and was glad I could help the team to a good finish. Hail State!"
