MSU Women’s Tennis Outlasts Rain, Georgia State For 4-1 Victory
February 18, 2018 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – In between two rain delays totaling four hours and 28 minutes, the Mississippi State women's tennis team (7-2) remained focused to ultimately defeat Georgia State (5-4) 4-1 on Sunday in the friendly confines of the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
It was State's 28th consecutive non-conference win at home and the Bulldogs now lead the series with GSU 4-1.
"It was a hard-earned win for us today," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "We started strong in doubles earning some early momentum. Getting that doubles point was definitely important because we had quite the battle on five out of six courts in singles. Khrystyna continued her solid play keeping the momentum on our side with a quick win. After that it was a battle on every court. I am happy to come away with a win over a solid team who definitely came ready to play. I feel like we continue to improve each week. Hard earned wins like these should give us confidence moving forward. I definitely appreciate the effort and focus our girls are putting forth so far this season."
The match was moved back from a 12 p.m. start time to a 1 p.m. start time after a first round of light rain late Sunday morning.
MSU came out strong in doubles as the pair of Magda Adaloglou and Janina Braun made quick work of Georgia State's Damira Muminovic and Kristin Rehse, 6-2 at the No. 2 position. Clinching the doubles point for the fourth time this season, State's duo of Sara Lizariturry and Anastasia Rentouli held off GSU's tandem of Anastasia Grosheva and Daniela Ramirez 6-3 at No. 3 giving the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead.
The Panthers would not go down without a fight, splitting the first sets evenly with the Bulldogs. Staying hot in singles, MSU senior Khrystyna Vozniak vanquished GSU's Grosheva 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 6 position – her seventh straight win - for a 2-0 Bulldog lead right before the second wave of rain came in. At that point, the match was suspended for nearly three-and-a-half hours, allowing the rain to move out and the courts to be dried.
Not allowing the delay to affect her, State senior Madison Harrison picked up right where she left off to overpower GSU's Elizabet Danailova, 6-1, 7-5 on court 2 for her fourth win in a row, extending the Bulldog lead to 3-0. The Panthers got their lone point of the day from Rehse as she outlasted State's Braun (MSU) 6-2, 7-6(6) at the No. 1 position.
Clinching her second match of the year, the MSU rookie Adaloglou posted a come-from-behind victory against GSU's Ramirez, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot securing the 4-1 victory. It was the true freshman's fourth straight win in singles, combined with six in a row in doubles.
In the two matches that were suspended, State's 116th-ranked Lizariturry led 6-3, 3-6, 4-1 over GSU's Muminovic on court 5. At No. 4, MSU's Rentouli was up 3-2 in a second-set tiebreak against Panther Arina Taluyenko after rallying from being down 5-2 in the set to force the tiebreak.
