MSU Women’s Tennis Upends Memphis 5-2; Improves To 8-2
February 24, 2018 | Women's Tennis
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Extending its current winning streak to six matches, the Mississippi State women's tennis team (8-2) battled a tough Memphis team (6-5) for a 5-2 victory Saturday afternoon at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.
It was State's 29th consecutive non-conference win at home and the Bulldogs now lead the series with Memphis 17-7.
"I am proud of the effort our girls put into getting this win," head coach Daryl Greenan said. "We played extremely well to win the doubles point and carried that momentum into singles. Give credit to Memphis for eventually fighting their way back into the match. It was a real test of our girls' focus and toughness, and I am happy with the way we were able to respond. Ultimately, we had enough heart and courage to get the hard-earned win."
MSU came out strong in doubles as the tandem of Madison Harrison and Khrystyna Vozniak made quick work of Memphis' Alisha Reayer and Anki Wind, 6-1 on court 1. Clinching the doubles point, State's duo of Magda Adaloglou and Janina Braun vanquished the Tiger pair of Katherine Cao and Hanna Sohn by the same score at No. 2, giving the Maroon & White an early 1-0 lead.
The Tigers would not go down without a fight, pushing three of the six singles matches to three sets. First off the courts, State's Rentouli won six straight games in the second set for a 6-1, 6-3 victory against UM's Reayer at No. 4. Following close behind, MSU's Harrison posted a straight-set 7-6(4), 6-4 triumph over Tiger Sohn on court 2 for a 3-0 Bulldog lead.
Memphis got its first point of the day on court 6 where MSU's Vozniak retired due to injury to Katherine Cao after the players had just split the first two sets 1-6, 7-6(5).
Clinching her first dual match of the year, State's Lizariturry outlasted UM's Claire Sullivan 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at the No. 5 position securing the Bulldog victory.
The Bulldogs and Tigers split the remaining two matches as UM's Wind held off State's Braun 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 at the No. 1 position. On court 3, MSU's 112th-ranked Adaloglou edged Tiger Laura Bente for a 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 victory to make the final score 5-2.
Next Up For MSU…
State continues its five-match homestand by hosting No. 11 South Carolina next Thursday, March 1, at 3 p.m. CT to begin 2018 Southeastern Conference action. MSU will also host Florida and Alcorn State in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 3.
